I've always loved the music of Terry Riley, but one album in particular -- the live recording Persian Surgery Dervishes, from 1972 -- had this smoky, spellbinding vibe that was utterly unique, even Riley himself never made another album which captured that same sound as well.
Well, here's J.D. Emmanuel, who also clearly loved that sound, with a deep, hypnotic album -- from 1982! -- that's all meditative, muted modal keyboard improv over pulsing, shifting loops. It goes deep down the rabbit-hole uncovered by Riley's late-night explorations... and is just as good. Burn some incense and let this sound wash over you.
