FDJ (Desert Psychlist) One of the finest prog/alternative releases of 2025 in my humble opinion. Every listen seems to reveal something new to marvel at. Favorite track: That Fair and Warlike Form.

Cookieat This is music that makes you feel like you're sinking to the bottom of the ocean with haunting leads that lull you in till you have entered a space where light doesn't reach anymore.
    Jono Schneider thumbnail
Jono Schneider Perfect deep dark doom Favorite track: Down, to the Stars.
    Unhallowed Remains thumbnail
Unhallowed Remains Simply stunning. Everything you could hope for in a Death Doom or Funeral Doom album. Massive riffage, extreme heaviness, A pervasive feeling of sheer weight and negativity and yet also inspiringly melodic. Since this was released, it has dominated my listening as my go-to favourite thing, so I think that means its definately on course for being a top album of the year. Favorite track: Antinatalism.

William August Crazy fast technical death metal. Every instrument and even the vocals are on point. This album is amazing, super brutal and fast but also very melodic, great example of this is the song godform, which has an amazing melodic part followed by a heavy and fast ending. Would absolutely recommend this album. Favorite track: Wormhole.
    Daniel Pearson thumbnail
Daniel Pearson Wow. Just wow. All the way, no holding back technical deathmetal. Probably transcending obscurity’s best band. Listened straight through. Gosh, this stuff is good. Favorite track: Twin Flame.
    Christopher Ryan thumbnail
Christopher Ryan I still can't believe this is all done by just 1 guitarist, unreal tech death. Favorite track: Sanguinary Solace.

    Nocturnal Egg (Jordan) thumbnail
Favorite track: Temple of Ashes.
    Metallurgical Fire thumbnail
Metallurgical Fire Take Depravity’s Evil Upheaval, combine it with the Erik Rutan produced Cannibal Corpse albums, and mix in a touch of 1349’s Hellfire, and you have one of the most barbaric musical assaults ever recorded. Inferno is insanely brutal and it never lets up. Truly savage. Favorite track: Relentless Infights.
    Murphrygian thumbnail
Murphrygian That is some wicked shrubbery! I can smell the arbory scents of wrath...

This is the type of extreme metal that makes me smile: fast and brutal with no respite. Thanks AofW!

Carsten Pieper Who am I to contradict Pulp's Jarvis Cocker? ;-)

These string quartet versions of (mostly) gothic classics might not be for every fan of the original version, but I'm always open to a little relocation of context. (Er, not always, the 90s dance version of Crimso's I Talk to the Wind might stand as a perfect example for when I don't...). Favorite track: A Forest (The Cure cover).
