    by Ichiko Aoba
    supported by
    imijen thumbnail
imijen Of course every rendition in this live album of Ichiko Aoba's previously released songs is beautiful as ever, but the new improvisations are somehow just as mesmerising as the complete songs. The opening improvisation features swirling ambiance with loops of soft chirping notes, and the following 51 minutes are as blissful as you can imagine. Aoba has shared countless live albums with us at this point, and Ginza Sony Park remains one of her most soothing. Favorite track: Seabed Eden + improvisation.

liepgg she's really a once-in-a-lifetime talent Favorite track: improvisation.
    Edward Fernandez thumbnail
Edward Fernandez It's so difficult to decide my favorite track. However, The rain from light and shadow is my favorite song of hers. テリフリアメ in Japanese.
The control she has over her voice is breathtaking and from what little I understand of the lyrics, the poetry is beautiful and personal. The segue from the previous song is icing on the cake as that is another one of my favorites.
I have learned some of her music, but this is one I know I could never do justice. Favorite track: The rain from light and shadow.

  3. SORROW - a reimagining of Gorecki's 3rd Symphony
    by Colin Stetson
    supported by
    V_Shaft thumbnail
V_Shaft A "remake" of Gorecki's 3rd Symphony. While the feel of Gorecki's original is here, what bothers me the most is that this rendition is TOO loud (as in, lacks dynamic range). Because of it, it often feels like an assault on the senses. Despite this, this is a good album - and if we someday get a more dynamic remaster, I'll be very happy! Favorite track: Sorrow: I - Lento — Sostenuto Tranquillo Ma Cantabile.

    Carter Moon thumbnail
Carter Moon Although he has kept the original arrangements almost entirely in tact, Stetson has completely augmened the instrumentation by utilizing his own skills on the saxophone, integrating black metal-inspired tremolo guitars and dungeon synths, and his sister’s incredibly powerful mezzo-soprano voice.

C://FNFN subtle reverie yet made of distinct musical parts, soft but not vague, quite a beautiful trip Favorite track: Heaven In Your Eyes.
    Ambientologist thumbnail
Ambientologist Though serene and quaintly loving in its delivery, 'Hold My Hand' reads like a pocketbook of miniature instances of awe and reverence. As if the sublime nature of a forest had been shrunk down to be carried in one's pocket, offering its own small respite from the mundane.

Perhaps most enthralling is the way in which each piece seems to breathe. The in and out of tones, and the space between them.

  1. Requiem For Hell

Death In Rebirth Death In Rebirth

    J. Wright Reviews thumbnail
    J. Wright Reviews This is a pretty interesting one for MONO: less symphonic than many of their albums, and thus carries a heavier tone to it, but still indisputably neoclassical. The title track feels a lot like a sequel to "Com(?)" and is truly a titan of post-rock writing! That song also is the mid-point of the album, with the first two tracks having a subtle tension underneath everything, and the last two tracks feel much calmer, if a bit somber. Requiem for Hell may be MONO's most underrated album so far! Favorite track: Requiem For Hell.
    katsumashi thumbnail
katsumashi genuinely so gorgeous . i think the album cover is a depiction of the empyrean (aka the living place of god) from the divine comedy ? and i have always loved artworks like this that depict the unknowable. it adds SO much to this album. makes me feel like im searching for an audience with the universe itself or something Favorite track: Requiem For Hell.
    Jeff thumbnail
Jeff Another amazing album. I’m never disappointed with anything they release. Of course I prefer some tracks over others, but I am really impressed with their discography. I love albums that I can listen to all the way through, no skips. This is definitely one. Favorite track: Ely's Heartbeat.

    J. Wright Reviews I've never heard a live album that sounded as flawless and hit the emotions as hard as Beyond the Past. It's not a 1:1 performance but the minor differences add so much character to this performance. Being in a concert hall with an actual orchestra and having incredible mixing, it makes for a sublime listen! Hearing the Halycon performance may have produced some moisture in the eyes, which doesn't happen to me all that often. Definitely buy physical if you can, it's a phenomenal little package! Favorite track: Halcyon (Live with the Platinum Anniversary Orchestra).
    Robbie thumbnail
Robbie The live version of "Nowhere, Now Here" is an incredible performance. Having now seen MONO perform live (albeit without an orchestra backing them), the energy and emotion within their music just completely consumes you. They are one of my favourite bands of all time.

"Ashes in the Snow" is another favourite song, as are the live performances of "Meet Us Where The Night Ends", "Halcyon", and "Death in Rebirth". Favorite track: Nowhere, Now Here (Live with the Platinum Anniversary Orchestra).
    John Buehler thumbnail
John Buehler Absolute stellar performance of this track. I find it incredibly moving to hear, and I will listen over and over again. Favorite track: Nowhere, Now Here (Live with the Platinum Anniversary Orchestra).

    J. Wright Reviews thumbnail
    J. Wright Reviews Pilgrimage of the Soul is an appropriately celestial & cinematic listen. This album will lift you into the heavens and take you on a journey, causing you to reflect on life, love and things greater than yourself. It also does a great job at creating an ebb and flow to the tones, going from energetic tracks like "Riptide" to drone tracks like "Heaven in a Wild Flower" and beautifully emotional epics like "Innocence" or "Hold Infinity in the Palm of Your Hand". The PERFECT post-rock record! Favorite track: Innocence.
    Jeff thumbnail
Jeff This band just doesn’t stop. I’m never disappointed with their releases, they always move me with their unique organization of sound. I’ve really enjoyed following them throughout the years, and always look forward to hear what they do next. Favorite track: Imperfect Things.

    J. Wright Reviews A very pleasant little EP that's perfect for Christmas! The music here is the 'typical' MONO (I mean that positively) but with a noticeably colder tone to it overall. From appropriate hopefulness ("Scarlet Holliday") to winter melancholy ("First Winter") to the ice crackling and soothing, crooning vocals capping things off ("Epilogue"), this EP is a beautiful and digestible listen that will definitely be part of my Christmas traditions going forward! Favorite track: First Winter.

Dustin Wall Looking back on Volume 2 after the release of Volume 3. I listened to a lot of MONO in 2024 and I went back to this one a lot. Haunting Echo really stood apart and all three tracks were distinct and worthwhile. Beloved is very peaceful and the emotion of the piece shines through. Happy New Year!
