philmh The Pioneer populates the album’s foreground, dancing Birch leaves alternating light and shade; with a prolific seeding of what’s to follow, the Birch is the perfect opener to help us see “the trees for The Woods.....” Favorite track: The Pioneer.
    Sven B. Schreiber (sbs) thumbnail
Sven B. Schreiber (sbs) What becomes immediately clear is that Hamish Napier is a brilliant composer and arranger. His music is Scottish folk at the core, sounding as authentic as can be. At the same time, there's a nice rock ingredient in most of the songs, shifting the album markedly towards folk rock of the "Nightnoise" kind - an Irish variant I've cherished quite a bit in the 80's and 90's. "Nightnoise" ceased to exist long ago... a warm welcome to Hamish Napier, who will get a place in my heart close to them. Favorite track: The Tree of the Return.

    Master of Alchemy thumbnail
Master of Alchemy Scottish folk centred around fiddle and piano. The album begins with Dawn Chorus, which slowly awakens to the rising sun. There are reflective compositions throughout, while Almost Home and Ascending lift the mood back up. I think Megan Henderson and Lauren MacColl should do a gig together. Favorite track: Ascending.

R Craig Bell This music is not pretty... it is Beautiful. Every time I listen to this I am taken to a new place where I'm struck with awe. I just listen to the album end to end and when it's over I feel like was given a gift.

    pierrelemer thumbnail
pierrelemer A wonderful collection of songs, beautifully arranged and presented, with some perfect instrumentation to do justice to both the poetic lyricism and Kim Carnie's gorgeous, clear and delicious voice. I've been lucky enough to see some of these songs featured live when Kim played at the First Light festival this summer, and I hope she can find time to return. This is a real 'keeper' of an album and in Luchd na Beurla has my favourite song from last year...and likely this year too xx Favorite track: Luchd na Beurla.

oblivion62 Blame Mark Radcliffe. He played her on Radio 2's folk show on January 4th, track 9 of the album, and I instantly fell in love with the song. The whole album is a thing of beauty and her voice, her vocal control, the musicianship, just awe inspiring.

The novelty may wear off yet but right now, I can't stop listening. Favorite track: Chan eil a' Chùis a' Còrdadh Rium.
