Paul This track sounds like Immortal dipping their toes into symphonic black metal. Awesome. And Dimmu doesn't just stick to that formula. They mix it up on each track. Some tracks lack aggression and memorability, but they make up for that with interesting compositions and instrumentation. Favorite track: Repository of Divine Transmutation.
H.L. "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant" was one of those legendary albums that got me into black metal; so it was clear for me that "Grand Serpent Rising" wouldn't captivate me in the same way. Nevertheless, I am surprised by how strong and energetic the album turned out: "Ascent" immediately impresses with gritty growls, and the rest of the tracklist features several powerful songs that benefit from less dominant symphonic elements. AlexP I would not allow myself to criticize works that always represent self-respecting efforts and vision. I would just say that I was out of sync with their previous two albums.
But there, I find Dimmu Borgir talking to me: a dark, violent, grandiose blockbuster. And also Shagrath's vocals should be highlighted.more...

And somehow it still all works. There are so many different vibes here but Cee-lo is epic throughout and the production quality is undeniable. Album of the Year contender for sure. Ippocalyptica I might know 10 words of Dutch, but the musical language of Walg's nuclear-powered melodic black metal on their third album can be understood by anyone with even the mildest appreciation for the glory days of mid-90's symphonic black metal and the more aggressive tendencies of the modern Dutch scene.
