    Robert Castle thumbnail
Robert Castle Monk's music just never gets old. This is an especially exciting interpretation of some of his work, a fiery but tuneful free jazz homage. Favorite track: Bye-Ya / Epistrophy.
    martelnine thumbnail
martelnine It’s remarkable how this band can disassemble and then reconstruct, rearrange, re-articulate and expand Monk’s music while still making it recognizable.
Another amazing recording. Favorite track: Round Midnight.
    arcana thumbnail
arcana The Organic Soul Machine Monks-up Monk. Outstanding! Heads be spinning. 'Bout time, too. Evidence kicks hard, like a giraffe. The world is fractured, and it is beautiful. Favorite track: Friday Thirteenth.

asswell A lot of nice grooves. Great album. Favorite track: Union Pool Melody.
    northernsky thumbnail
northernsky Ah yes, the return of the longstanding rock tradition of the self-titled 2nd album... exactly what we should expect from a rock lifer like Chris, as the group weaves a myriad of sounds & influences together, resulting in the creation of something entirely unique; ultimately, the most 'familiar' thing being the fact that Chris never stops exploring. Absolutely mesmerizing.

wilson-c Wonderful album and great sounding. The extended live tracks in my view work so well and a preference over the shorter tracks on prior studio albums. Favorite track: The Drums.
    Tim Hughes thumbnail
Tim Hughes Incredible. The skill of each member is clearly on display here but the palpable feeling of joy it conveys is what really makes it for me!
    mattgraupman thumbnail
mattgraupman Some painters build up their pieces by using dozens and dozens of thin, nearly imperceptibly different layers of paint, until they've created a work of art that's incredibly deep and rich. That's what SML have done with "Spontaneous Music Live." Musically, of course. Each little addition or subtraction pays off beautifully as these tracks twist and morph and blossom. Amazing work. Favorite track: Roundabouts.

    Lars Gotrich thumbnail
Lars Gotrich Open tunings open hearts, y’all. It’s hard to believe that, before last year’s Houses of the Holy, guitarist Chris Schlarb and percussionist Chad Taylor hadn’t jammed before — there’s an immediate understanding here, as they get lost in a loose ramble of acoustic ragas, front-porch strum-and-drums and even something that might pass as a James Taylor tune. www.vikingschoice.org/archive/vikings-choice-guide-to-bandcamp-friday-may-2021/
