Metallurgical Fire They got the production right this time. You can call it cosmic, but this music is proper terrifying. Imagine if Lord Mantis became a progressive tech-death band and you’ll get close. Incantation and Morbid Angel sound like Blue Oyster Cult next to this madness. The vocals are possessed. Fantastic! I’ve known what they were capable of. Now the chaos is on your doorstep. Favorite track: Oblivionauts.
    gnihilo thumbnail
gnihilo Wow, next-level cosmic death metal! Not the typical "cruising through time and space", but rather "sucked into nothingness" kind: Proggy, dissonant and terrifying. And the drumming is totally out of this world! Favorite track: Panspermic Bio-Dome.
    Stephen thumbnail
Stephen Oh man this does not disappoint. If you like some cavernous space death metal; this is your jam. Looking forward to having this on repeat for the rest of the year. Well done! Favorite track: Putrescent Mireborn.
    positronicping thumbnail
positronicping An immense interdimensional offering from Devoid Of Thought. The riffs warp and morph along with the song structures, and the overall coherence adds a strange smoothness to the angular chaos. The production has a wonderful liveness that makes it feel like you're in the room with them. First Cryptic Shift, then Ordh, now this? 2026 is turning into a landmark year for the cosmically inclined part of the death metal spectrum! Favorite track: Oblivionauts.

JDMP top tier black metal. wergild strikes again. it’s uncanny.
    positronicping thumbnail
positronicping @Urso is spot on about the beguiling mixture of rawness and finesse on display here. So many thrilling harmonic/melodic passages. Wergild gets more Wergild with every release, and I am here for it with hyperboreal bells on. Favorite track: Gelid Summoning.

    Deep darkest thanks !

    And repeat, again
    Urso X thumbnail
Urso X Aside from Tatterdemalion’s superb material, this is quite possibly my favourite Wergild release to date. Unmistakably raw/DIY, yet refined just enough to reveal a high level of musicianship/finesse, Threnodies features some sparkling mini-solos and other truly magical moments scattered throughout. (Also, on my third listen, and I’ll be damned if I can pick a favourite track, always a good sign.) High replay value on this one, folks!!

You nailed the adjective for this, positronic: BEGUILING.

MetalJazzVinyl Perfect balance of Doom Metal and Progressive Rock. Brilliant record - I own the Limited Edition, Repress, Orange Transparent.
    Mike Henson thumbnail
Mike Henson Agree with all the reviews on here. A fantastic progressive doom/sludge album with killer riffs. A buildup to their even better new album.
    Smekermann thumbnail
Smekermann This is doom I can get behind. I feel like getting into the intricacies of the music would run way over the character limit, so let me just say that this is amazing psychedelic doom backed by a great vocalist who can match the intensity of the riffs herein. The songs that hit hardest for me are Transient and Ark Debris - the riff progression in Transient is just so fucking satisfying, and I love the atmosphere in Ark Debris, and the way the heavy isn’t introduced until about halfway through. Favorite track: Ark Debris.

  5. Self-Annihilating Consciousness
    by Eigenlicht

    brett thumbnail
brett two of the best labels out there coming together for this release - 4 distinct sweeping black metal epics, rich with keyboard-heavy atmospherics, never overstay their welcome in spite of length. Favorite track: Labrys.
    chrundle thumbnail
chrundle Just look at that art. I had to buy it.
    Ippocalyptica thumbnail
Ippocalyptica 2018 has brought me many pleasant surprises, perhaps most of all a high number of incredible full-length debut albums. Until the recent release of several incredible debut albums under the sadly soon to be defunct Fallen Empire records, I was certain that Self-Annihilating Consciousness was going to be my sleeper debut metal album of the year, but this does not change the fact that Eigenlicht has released an absolute gem here. It is rare that a band can write four songs that are each in excess of 10 minutes and make it so that each track is consistently compelling and highly varied, yet that is what has happened here. While this could easily be described as atmospheric black metal, this is so much more than that, with each song representing a sonic journey through a different landscape that will take you through sorrowful valleys and triumphant peaks. These are all skilled musicians, but what impressed me the most was the interplay between the two guitarists, who create hypnotic melodies with ease and engage in a delicate dance throughout the entire album. The keyboards are used very tastefully and are never overbearing, and I applaud the drummer for exercising restraint, for when he does unleash torrents of blasting, they are all the more effective. This is a fantastic album, but Hagia Sophia must stand as one of the best metal songs of 2018. It is a slow burner, but once it exploded (you will know to when it happens), it is utter aural bliss. Buy or die! Favorite track: Hagia Sophia.
    whatisthis8175 thumbnail
whatisthis8175 Atmospheric with some heavy, beautiful synths. Favorite track: Berzerker.
