fyeahmetal I'm in for anything Chad Gailey drums on. To my ears, this is excellent death/doom, about 80% the former (very good, sort of like Incantation with a straighter back) and 20% the latter (superb, I want more of it). There is pretty much an infinite amount of this kind of contemporary OSDM around, but this record stands out by spreading its wings with doomy passages, keening chords, and lovely additions by violinist Andrea Morgan (see aforementioned pun :P). Favorite track: Metamorphosis.
    citysavage thumbnail
citysavage Given how often I've reached for Through Wilderness over the past four years, Upon Desolation was an instant buy. Does not disappoint. Slimy and bruising death doom throughout. I'm also really digging how the band stretches out, mixing tempos and varying the attack. Violin is a nice touch. Favorite track: Days of Grey.
    Ellis Ray thumbnail
Ellis Ray A soundtrack for the smoke filled skies and burning landscape of the west. Pulverizing blasts, followed by OSDM d-beats building in fury, then breaking to introspective death doom riffs, with tasteful hints of prog and melodic DM. Some cultured piano and fastidious violin accents the sound scape, encouraging the onslaught.

This album transcends genre limitations without offending the hoards, giving listeners a new death metal cvlt classic for our era!

Hail to Bay Area Death Metal! 🤘🔥🥀 Favorite track: Defiled by Fire.

PannionSeer Churning, ego-decimating death metal with mature songwriting and memorable riffing. Carbonized has struck gold here. Favorite track: Chrysalis of Sorrow.

Funeral Fog A vortex of absolute blistering doomy blackened death metal. It's strange, engrossing, maddening and daring. Aberration stand out among all others in the genre, their unique cave dwelling sound will batter you into the fetal position.

iheartf2p There's a lot to love in this album. the riffs are a no brainer and some of the most brutal and technical there is in the genre. I think the biggest strength is the song writing and arrangement. the way riffs ebb and flow, not just from song to song but from verse to chorus to bridges and such...very well put together. Terrasite was my favorite album for last few years, this is close, but the cohesiveness of the latter outshines the former, imo. GOAT extreme metal band for sure! Favorite track: Lifestalker.
    Introvertoid thumbnail
Introvertoid Cattle's best record to-date by a healthy margin, and in my opinion one of the best DM albums of the 2010's, period. A dozen-plus years later and it's as fresh and exciting as ever.
    xtheharvstfloorx thumbnail
xtheharvstfloorx brutal and techy as fuck while still having some really dramatic emotional moments, great mix between the two Favorite track: Forced Gender Reassignment.

Lars Gotrich There's no wrong place to start with the super prolific Japanese artist Hakobune, but the B-side here blurs a two-chord progression over a tense, yet rapturous 19 minutes … I kinda lost track of time while listening and stared at a barren tree outside my window for just as long. buttondown.email/vikingschoice/archive/4c068821-c84a-40f5-9bd3-d34c003bfd14 Favorite track: above the northern skies shown, pt.2.
