Not the usual kind of album in my collection. Shaped by traditional acoustic instruments and enriched by Catherine Graindorge’s strings (Singer Simon H. Jones appears in return on her lyrical Songs for the Dead), The Devil’s Door has an distinctive sound. And Also the Trees remain one of the few authentic survivors of the early 1980s new wave. I sometimes miss the more energetic side of the band, heard in Shaletown, Feeling Fine, and Slow Pulse Boy. Still, The Devil’s Door is a remarkable album.
Favorite track: I lit a light.
