  1. The Future Is Cancelled
    by Captain, We're Sinking

saddrweirdr An all-time great record for me, have constantly come back to it over the last decade and never tired of it. Pretty dark album lyrically, but it has strong songwriting that effectively paints a picture of various dreary life situations with a specificity that makes them seem relatable. The theme of god looming large in the characters' lives is omnipresent across the record and works extremely well as a motif to tie everything together. Favorite track: Shoddy Workmanship.
    corymillar thumbnail
corymillar This entire album has been perfect all 200-300 times I've listened to it over the years. I never get sick of the energy and raw emotion on this one. The belting voices, and loud instruments just make for a great night of drinking with the pals and spinning Captain. Favorite track: Beer Can.
    Daniel Leonard thumbnail
Daniel Leonard It perfectly captures the feeling of depression and isolation Favorite track: More Tequila, Less Joe.

  2. Some Of It Was True
    by The Menzingers

    jayjules thumbnail
jayjules A haunting album of heartache and loneliness. Lyrics speak of lost loves and lost souls with a few shoots of green poking through the hopelessness. Nostalgia and reminisce run throughout. Chock full of the riffs and melodies we have come to love and expect from The Menzingers. Favorite track: Alone in Dublin.

  1. Blackbraid II
    by Blackbraid

    Ricardo Cristof thumbnail
Ricardo Cristof Well, after listening to Death and Black Metal for over 35 years, it sometimes gets boring, even if bands try to innovate. But then you stumble upon an album, which immediately clicks: it fresh, but familiar. It’s emotional, intelligent and complex, but not for complexities’ sake. It flows, it works, it’s authentic.
This album is absolutely great, it’s all I want from this kind of music: cold soundscapes, raging fires, the embrace of darkness. 10/10
    Obsidian One thumbnail
Obsidian One The spirit returns in one of the most important albums in recent metal history. "Moss Covered Bones" at 8:01 — can you feel it? Krieger channels the fierce soul of his heritage, with echoes of generations of oppression and resilience, rising again through the raw, rebellious power of black metal, with stunning acoustic beauty as well. Do you see it? Do you hear it? Hail to the witch hawk and the force he brings to the scene. Favorite track: A Song of Death on Winds of Dawn.
    Urso X thumbnail
Urso X A metal master class and true work of art. (Note: The diversity of styles in three distinct acts isn’t a flaw, it’s that way by design.)

I finally got this because I wanted something truthful and brilliant to pair with The Rime of Memory, and I inexplicably remembered that someone’s review of Blackbraid II had mentioned Panopticon. Thanks, Metallurgical Fire, I owe you! Favorite track: Moss Covered Bones on the Altar of the Moon.
