  1. Our New Earth
    by Sirkis/Bialas IQ
    supported by
    Sven B. Schreiber (sbs) thumbnail
Sven B. Schreiber (sbs) This double album was another Black Friday hot deal. It has resided on my wishlist since its release, so it was high time to buy it. Here we've got two accomplished musicians and composers in a symbiosis, creating something real stunning, which doesn't fit readily into one of the established genres. Sylwia Białas' vocals are the icing on the cake, no matter if she sings scat, or her own lyrics in her native language, Polish - one of the world's most beautiful languages. Favorite track: Nocturnity.
    Carsten Pieper thumbnail
Carsten Pieper And yet another gem released by MoonJune Records. The quartet around MoonJune percussion/drum stalwart Asaf Sirkis and Polish singer/composer Sylvia Bialas offer a very idiosyncratic mixture of very different ingredients: Polish folklore, Mid-Eastern and Indian music/rhythms, prog-rocky bits and more. Quite adventuruous, one might think, but it works astoundingly well together. Fascinating! Favorite track: Message From The Blue Bird.
    Peter Jones thumbnail
Peter Jones Exquisite performances and an incredible dynamic approach across the whole album. Favorite track: Letter To A..

blox A hint of King Crimson.

Peter Jones Melt. This music just lets you let yourself be absorbed. Four gifted musicians work so smoothly together delivering this work, all you need do is relax and enjoy. There aren't words beyond that.
    Carsten Pieper thumbnail
Carsten Pieper And once again, MoonJune Records brought together an astounding line-up. Well, Xavi Reija and Dusan Jevtovic have been XaDu and Tony Levin and Markus Reuter are two-third of the Stick Men. Here all four join forces and present an outstanding instrumental progressive rock album which feels very jazzy in places. Highly contrasted (in dynamics and mood) sound sculptures with plenty room for improvisation and interplay... Favorite track: Deep Ocean.

Carsten Pieper Another stunning MoonJune Records' release. For more praise, please see above: I shouldn't try to best Messieurs Wyatt's and Bruford's descriptions of Asaf Sirkis ;-) Favorite track: Kinship.
    Peter Jones thumbnail
Peter Jones Wow, that's was a trip, man!

The whole band, on every track, sounding organically joined. The first three tracks are a suite in themselves.

The cross-over of the guests between tracks ensures there's no feeling things have been slotted together. Favorite track: For Eric.

  5. OK, But Why?

Carsten Pieper From Failure to Fracture to ConstruKction of Tight, or so...
You don't have to read the liner notes to notice the strong crimsoid DNA of this album! But reading the liner notes, I can't really put it better (no surprise!) than a certain Mr. Vai:
"an unapologetic, dense, alien melodic, rhythmic brain twisting, sublimely lovely solo record."

And hard to pick a fave... I went for one of the Bach concerto movements as this is a very fresh approach to "classic coverage". Favorite track: Bach - Concerto for Violin and Oboe, Mov 3.
    saxon_now thumbnail
saxon_now This is just awesome instrumental prog madness! Keep on Making Weird Music! Favorite track: Binge.

misunderstander Fans of Eivind Aarset’s ambient side who also hanker for the nü jazz and rockish guitar mastery of his 1998-2015 Jazzland albums should find much pleasure here. Among many highlights, the driving, dramatic theme to “Outbound”/“Inbound” shares DNA with IE’s “Wanderlust” and “Pearl Hunter” is as immersive as its title suggests. The album holds enveloping atmospheres and simpatico 4-tet (plus guests) interplay in perfect balance, with Aarset’s extraordinary, effects-laden fretwork leading the way. Favorite track: Outbound, or Stubb1.
    woundedhollow thumbnail
woundedhollow Easily one of the best albums of 2021. Eivind's music is a perfect blend of jazz, post-rock, ambient, and electronic music like nothing else out there and it should be alot more recognized than it is. It's up there with Sonic Codex as his best so far.
    prosperoaw thumbnail
prosperoaw A feast for the ears; quite a sound palette. Favorite track: Pearl Hunter.
