maxlphillips This feels like being forced to listen to the album of the year through a thin, muffling film. The compositional beauty is consistently and pervasively mind-blowing – never letting go of my ever-pleased attention – but the recording quality almost castrates it. Despite that, I came out of this thoroughly harrowed; unrelentingly pummelled with gorgeousness to the point of complete cleansing and reinvigoration. Favorite track: Ghost Eyes in the Fire Light.

Aimfri I'm not crying, you're crying! Favorite track: A Culture of Wilderness.

    FLESH MECHANIC thumbnail
FLESH MECHANIC Fierce crusty powerviolence that's gonna melt your face off in seconds. The HM-2 fueled guitars take the lead in fronting this orchestra of grinding death, giving the whole thing the signature filthy distorted drive. The way Black Tabs switch from fast-paced assault to riffs is orgasmic. Get ready to break some stuff. For fans of Black Breath, Trap Them, Nails. Favorite track: Black Tabs.
    Darknight thumbnail
Darknight I can't believe this band are from Scotland.Dark Habits make stunning grindcore which is exactly what I want to hear.Cave Paintings is a must and shows that the UK has another stunning band. Favorite track: Wishful Thinking.

Bog Trotter Everyone's mentioning BI but this reminds me of early Gojira. Terra Incognita vibes! Now that's a compliment. The plodding rivals that of Melvins good show, good show. I need the sound of that crash injecting into my veins boys Favorite track: Traversing The Wandering Star.
    Nuclear Girl thumbnail
Nuclear Girl I slept on this record on release, perhaps because I felt that cosmic death metal was becoming a quickly crowded niche. But now that the band is sadly no more, I keep returning... Soulgazer is an album that racks up light years of travel, covering vast distances with its ambitious yet raw rocketeering.
    Stephen thumbnail
Stephen Blood Incantation-esque jam sesh, perfection. Favorite track: Transcendental Visions.

the_bassiah This album is a wonderful masterpiece, that shows how the thrash nature of Cynic was able to evolve to the progressive nature of the band to come. This album manages to give a different flavor than what we get on focus, and really shocks me with how straight up thrash it could be. I love being able to hear the process, and this demo is the best example of that process. It also just sounds really, really good. Favorite track: Pleading For Preservation (Demo 1991).

    StrengthWithin thumbnail
StrengthWithin I did not see this progression coming from this band. This maybe the oddest combination of genres I’ve ever encountered. The dreamy quality stands in stark contrast to many of the vocal parts. The psychedelic feel enhances the sheer depth of sound. And is that a saxophone???
    Ippocalyptica thumbnail
Ippocalyptica Zany, bombastic, and adventurous, Dreaming the Strife for Love is vaguely similar to Blood Incantation’s fusion of progressive rock and death metal from Absolute Elsewhere, but is actually quite different beyond the superficial connections. Bedsore goes for a more operatic and fun approach, with more progressive and way less death metal, and it really works here. There is something about Italian metal bands, like Devil Doll and Bedsore, where seamless genre-blending is second nature. Lovely!
    Bart thumbnail
Bart I shouldn't like this, because most prog stuff makes me sleepy and bored. This weird beast doesn't. I can't put my finger on why, but those who normally shy from proggy metal might want to give this some time. Favorite track: Scars of Light.
