Richter I AM NOT NORMAL AND I MUST SING.
Two tracks in particular are killing me. My insides are all wrong. Obviously, there was a good reason to put off taking this plunge for like a frakking year. DAMNIT. Favorite track: I'm Normal.

FLXFR An excellent follow-up to a successful resurrection. Favorite track: Feet First.

    nctwl thumbnail
nctwl Toby Driver et al continue to be one of the most interesting groups in the avante garde space. My favorite KD/TD release in a while, not for lack of competition. Favorite track: Closet Door in the Room Where She Died.
    Metallurgical Fire thumbnail
Metallurgical Fire Toby Driver may be the purest musician alive. He just doesn’t care whether he makes you uncomfortable. He isn’t afraid to do things vocally that would embarrass the shit out of a lesser talent. I don’t feel like I’m listening to a product when I hear this. It’s like I’m hearing someone’s soul speaking in the language of music. There’s nothing like it. Favorite track: Oracle By Severed Head.

F̲̜̲̂ṷ̖͒̔t̨͉̠͒u̼̟͑ͅr̷̫̝̍e̶̲͔̐ ̖͔͌͜E̯͕̕͝y̢̪̟͞ē̛̙͞s̡̰͛̄ Dunno why, but Oracle By Severed head makes me think of the cover art for None So Vile by Cryptopsy…

Automatic Writing makes me feel like I have ESP, or tinnitus, or both! 😶‍🌫️ immersed in nature/forest/bassAliens/White2/Monoliths & Dimensions vibes

Song lengths that are an endurance test even for deep listeners, but hardly arduous. Deciduous in its temporal shadow. Whose murmur casts an unpredictable human hex on algorithmic prediction.

    Sam thumbnail
Sam Being in the same room as these guys while they play was fucking amazing, so much talent and wonderful noise. I love other projects by each member but this album feels like each's best work, respectfully. Favorite track: Yellow Dawn.
    Urso X thumbnail
Urso X I've spent days listening and trying to come up with a coherent and original review for this stunning album, but I seem to be at a loss for words (a rarity for me). The most cogent thing I can say that hasn't already been said is that SUMAC's musical evolution and sprawling, semi-improvisational style strongly calls to mind a metal version of the critically acclaimed late 8os/early 90s post-rock pioneers Talk Talk. Singular artists, uncompromising vision, every album a masterpiece. Transcendent! Favorite track: Yellow Dawn.
    chandlerhank thumbnail
chandlerhank This album is a 10/10 all the way through, defining the dotted line of experimental. Favorite track: The Stone's Turn.

Zachary Gillan Who knew that I’ve been looking for black metal with gang vocals all this time
    Zarvoc thumbnail
Zarvoc The soundtrack of Brooklyn during COVID. The guitar parts are ambulances, police sirens, heart monitors, thermometers,... the bleeps and eerie sounds of emergency. And there's an album-long thematic narrative as well. From horror... to acceptance. Favorite track: In The Basin Of Alkaline Grief.

Urso X This album was a revelation to me. Rye’s talent is undeniable, and the heart, soul, and passion he brings to his music is unsurpassed. A true atmospheric black metal jewel, one of my favourite albums of 2023. Favorite track: Трехногая слава.
    Zachary Gillan thumbnail
Zachary Gillan Finally, the numinous blackened atmospheric folk doom post-rock ambient drone ecstatic choral metal record I’ve been waiting for Favorite track: Навсегда.
    Ekot thumbnail
Favorite track: Навсегда.

    Cordial Despair thumbnail
Cordial Despair I really love the vocals. Can’t stress it enough. This band sticks out in my collection for being the most different, which is a good thing, because it has to be done to push everything forward. This band is very post-directional, and the post-hardcore elements are pretty strong. The drum grooves and atmosphere on track 4 are pretty filthy, so it’s a definite favorite. There are a lot of different emotions with this and it is to be welcomed. Favorite track: Flowers For My Succubus.
    Hentai Heroin thumbnail
Hentai Heroin ... This album is dark and dazzlingly bright at the same time, and gives the feeling of some kind of narrative. ... I personally prefer the dazzling side of your music. Favorite track: (SideQuest).
    hedies23 thumbnail
hedies23 This is like early Dance Gavin Dance meets The Grateful Dead meets Deafheaven. Or something. Super unique release! I'm biased, because I mastered it, but I think it's really good. Favorite track: WIwTiHtOhUT.
    Lloyde Olonko thumbnail
Lloyde Olonko As expansive & deep as the ocean, this glorious experience is overwhelming ⚡️ BRAVO! Favorite track: (SideQuest).

EvilBastard That perfect middle ground between black metal and funeral doom. Hauntingly beautiful. Favorite track: Wriithe.
    zionengine thumbnail
zionengine Operatic doom metal with subterranean vocals. For all that, spelling each song with two "i"s suggests an ember of humor in the ashes. For those of us who miss Virgin Black, Spiine is a comforting sliice of gloom piie. Favorite track: Myroblysiia.
    Cordial Despair thumbnail
Cordial Despair This is very experimental and complete feeling. I love the flux between the funeral doom, faster(haha) doom, and DSBM. The atmospheres and orchestral elements are just very beautifully added. The vocals are so raw and remind me a bit of the vocals in an atmospheric sludge band called North. This will be a gem to treasure forever. So glad I preordered and can’t wait for my merch so I can rep it proudly!! Favorite track: Oubliiette.

Frostbite Remixes can often disappoint, but this compilation has a surprisingly high number of incredible reinterpretations. I'm not a huge fan of the long, droney instrumental tracks to be honest, but the majority of these songs are actually quite good, some even rivalling the originals. Definitely recommend for all fans of the band and fans of post-metal and industrial! Favorite track: JK Broadrick "Hym".
    Mr.Paul thumbnail
Mr.Paul Some real gems here. A little chaff also, but to be fair, taking this as a whole album at once and expecting to hear the nuance is ambitious. Can't believe I was too broke back in the day and shunned the vinyl series. Favorite track: JK Broadrick "Hym".
    nxgater thumbnail
nxgater remixes can be hit and miss but these are terrific. all the remixers clearly love the source music and it works brilliantly. had the vinyl for a while- side C is my favourite. Favorite track: Tim Hecker "Carry" (Second Version).

Dylan Dempsey it took me WAY too long to give this album a try; I have been a major fan of Panopticon and its message since I was 15. I gave this a spin and by track six I had already made the decision to buy the digital album and I'm buying the CD this week. there's something really special going on here, you can hear the magic. same with The Red Sea EP and Mosquito Control EP. barbaric savagery with beautiful, meaningful groove.
    dlberes thumbnail
dlberes Going back to this album, I thought it might be a little crusty compared to what follows, but no, it’s incredible and distinct, these guys just exploded out of the gate, bless Favorite track: Swarm Reigns (Down).

the metal psychotherapist Gritty, intense, angsty, and approachable...as if you're listening to them at your favorite small, intimate club in town. Favorite track: Celestial (The Tower).
