  1. Spontaneous Music Live
    by SML

wilson-c Wonderful album and great sounding. The extended live tracks in my view work so well and a preference over the shorter tracks on prior studio albums. Favorite track: The Drums.
    Tim Hughes thumbnail
Tim Hughes Incredible. The skill of each member is clearly on display here but the palpable feeling of joy it conveys is what really makes it for me!
    mattgraupman thumbnail
mattgraupman Some painters build up their pieces by using dozens and dozens of thin, nearly imperceptibly different layers of paint, until they've created a work of art that's incredibly deep and rich. That's what SML have done with "Spontaneous Music Live." Musically, of course. Each little addition or subtraction pays off beautifully as these tracks twist and morph and blossom. Amazing work. Favorite track: Roundabouts.

yakuzadog14 I almost shouted "that was live?!?!?" when I heard the crowd applause at the end of Daves. I can't overstate how precise these guys are despite having no composed material. Everything is performed flawlessly yet the music is far from sterile or unimaginative. The band will often explore a groove, but the contours of that groove change as the band makes their way through it. Records don't often leave me struggling to come up with any analogues the way this one has. AOTY contender. Favorite track: Daves.

JackG Emily A. Sprague is an outstanding ambient artist. I listen to all of their works 100's of times. Their music has great relistening value. These tracks reward patience as they reveal their secrets very slowly. It's minimalistic but detailed on close inspection. In other words, ambient perfection. Favorite track: Hokkaido.
    matthew mckinnon thumbnail
matthew mckinnon Just lovely. There's a lot of 'this sort of thing' out there, but when it connects it feels very special. Emily's stuff feels organic and heartfelt and I keep coming back to it.

    sam_125 thumbnail
sam_125 One of the most jaw - droppingly beautiful acoustic guitar albums I've ever heard. Not a word is spoken, but the album radiates poetry, history.

River is the Civil War, the Reconstruction, the Great Depression - it's New England tobacco and cans of beer and Indian headresses and daurogotypes. Perfect album. Favorite track: Song For The Setting Sun I.
    Lou thumbnail
Lou Daniel Bachman is a truly unique player in the American Primitive canon. This album is his most focused and fulfilling. Favorite track: Won't You Cross Over To That Other Shore.
    Levrikon thumbnail
Levrikon My favorite albums of 2015, #6.
Absolutely astounding solo acoustic guitar. Bachman is an absolute genius from the first minute, and 'Won't You Cross Over to That Other Side' has to be one of the most impressive examples of guitar virtuosity I've ever heard, and the rest of the record just backs up that virtuosity. Favorite track: Won't You Cross Over To That Other Shore.
