    Luke thumbnail
Luke Emily Dickinson poetry, translated into French, over black metal-infused post-punk (or vice versa). A different take on the Turpitude model and one I'm really enjoying.

Obsidian One I had "Entourée de mon lit de fleurs" on repeat after discovering it. Such addictive and emotionally potent melodies. The opening riff reminds me of an old NES game, though I couldn't say which one. This track is easily the standout for me on the album, and perhaps even of the discography. The riff at 3:29 is mesmerizing. Alice is one of the most compelling artists in extreme metal today. You can read my interview with her here: sergebourgouin.com/obsidian-one/coffret-de-bijoux/ Favorite track: Entourée de mon lit de fleurs.
    Harold N’Hiver thumbnail
Harold N’Hiver Fantastic work, yet again.

The greatness of Alice’s work comes down to one thing, and that’s how well she handles her guitars. She can play her ass off, and that really carries her music. The riffs are terrific, and that enables her to write really good songs. She’s also able to coax an incredible degree of atmosphere and feeling out of her instruments. The first two songs on this album are high-energy bangers, and then the third track, my favorite, has more sombre tones. She can do it all. Favorite track: Peintre.

  3. Turpitude #1

    Obsidian One thumbnail
Obsidian One Raw as it gets. The riff at 3:13 in I is incredibly emotive, as is the riff at 1:35 in II. I discovered Turpitude after coffret de bijoux, another extreme metal project showcasing Alice's deep understanding of more than just a few genres. Brume hiémale, Subalterne, and Mordoré by Turpitude are also must-have releases, each with their own frostbitten yet melodic guitar riffs, tormented vocals, and atmospheric darkness.
    TomCush thumbnail
    TomCush Super raw sound.
Sounds, at times, more like a living thing than music. A highly agitated living thing.
    Awesome first release.

YomaBarr This kills. Raw BM, raw recording and as the others have said some of the best I have heard lately. More!!!!

    Obsidian One thumbnail
Obsidian One Turpitude delivers dark, raw atmosphere, melodic aggression, and emotional depth. "Anciens chênes" has distinctive vocals starting around 2:06, layered over powerful and emotive guitar riffs. Alice is a fountain of creative energy who never seems to run dry on ideas. "Entités sans âge enveloppés par le gel" is another highlight track. I also recommend "Entourée de mon lit de fleurs" from the Mordoré album. Favorite track: Anciens chênes.
    TomCush thumbnail
TomCush A noticeable step forward in musicianship and songwriting from the first release. Higher production values while still retaining a great raw feel.
Doesn't sound quite as feral and evil as the first release but that's a worthwhile sacrifice, in my opinion. Really good, intense black metal.

𝔅𝔩𝔦𝔰𝔰 ॐ 𝔄𝔟𝔶𝔰𝔰 Perfectly raw and emotional black metal. Turpitude, you won me over.

bmurator Canadian Atmospheric Black Metal. A one woman, Alice Simard, project. This is utterly amazing! Just four tracks & the time goes by almost instantly! Plus that first track is simply divine! The subtle agression & beautiful melodies complement each other perfectly! FFO Trhä (even better!) & some of the work by Victoria C. H. (Careus & others). Highly recommended!!! Favorite track: faint but ever so loving.

maxlphillips This feels like being forced to listen to the album of the year through a thin, muffling film. The compositional beauty is consistently and pervasively mind-blowing – never letting go of my ever-pleased attention – but the recording quality almost castrates it. Despite that, I came out of this thoroughly harrowed; unrelentingly pummelled with gorgeousness to the point of complete cleansing and reinvigoration. Favorite track: Ghost Eyes in the Fire Light.

sashavonkarl74 We get the deeply immersive atmo-BM that SVRM has been consistently delivering over the past, but a heavy layer of melancholy on top, driven by the events and the indelible trace left in a world torn by war. Outstanding work, not surprising indeed, as SVRM delivers only top-notch art. Highly recommended !! Favorite track: Мертвий край.

    Urso X thumbnail
Urso X Melancholic, cinematic black metal that could be the soundtrack for a documentary about psychological suffering under terminal, late-stage hyper-capitalism. The title says it all, really, and what it doesn’t say, the remarkable video for “Spectral Insomnia” certainly makes explicit. All that being said, BDA isn’t the soul-destroying buzz kill you might otherwise imagine; the musicality, artistry, and authenticity displayed elevates it to the realm of inspired (& inspiring) truth-telling. Kudos! Favorite track: Spectral Insomnia.
    highmarx thumbnail
highmarx I’m here via Brad Sanders’ monthly metal column in Stereogum, having never heard this artist, and I was immediately awestruck. This one really breathes new life into atmospheric black metal, despite its brooding, ominous energy. I can’t recommend this enough. Favorite track: Opaque Mist.
    Antrodemus thumbnail
Antrodemus This is a dark, melancholic album, beautifully composed like a film soundtrack. It feels immersive, like watching an emotional memoir. It speaks to me personally.
Best listened to from start to finish, it takes you through a bleak emotional journey. Respect to Januaryo Hardy, and thanks to all the supporting musicians. I hope this album serves as catharsis for you and for listeners who connect with it. Favorite track: Bleak Days Ahead, Pt. II.
    BoboDupla thumbnail
BoboDupla Another fantastic LP by Pure Wrath. Really loving the sad, emotional vibe. The music is varied enough, there are elements of other genres present and the whole album takes you on a journey through all the bleak parts of the world. Favorite track: Opaque Mist.
