  1. Vol. 1
    by chipmunks on 16 speed
    supported by
    Jascha Narveson thumbnail
Jascha Narveson Somehow these slowed-down recordings of Alvin & The Chipmunks doing covers are better than the originals.

The drums are like an avalanche.

The singing just sounds fascinatingly sleezy most of the time.

Walk Like an Egyptian is especially epic, with ambiguously non-gendered vocals over a backing band that sounds like early era Godflesh.

This version of Heaven Is A Place On Earth might haunt me forever. As if David Lynch re-wrote my childhood memories of that song. Favorite track: Walk Like an Egyptian.
    lagsterfr thumbnail
lagsterfr I’ve heard too much music. Phenomenal! Favorite track: My Sharona.

creecrui The way 'Refugee' ought to be heard
    Robert Writhe thumbnail
Robert Writhe Still the kinda shit I've been on lately. If I'm honest this collection isn't as great as volume 1 but it's still a good listen. Favorite track: Bettie Davis Eyes.

    They/Them Bones thumbnail
They/Them Bones The only criticism one could have is that it is a single, and not a full length holiday album. Great ending.
    cjschutter thumbnail
cjschutter This version of the song has such a melancholic and depressive edge to it, almost sarcastic in its well wishes. It completely shifts how you hear it this way, and I'm frankly addicted to it.
    wuhuislander thumbnail
wuhuislander Holy shit??? It’s somehow still very emotional. Crazy how that works!

    sophiebbls thumbnail
sophiebbls Such a groovy and fun album. Consistently feels like a hidden away 80s hit when it only came out 10 years ago. So glad I gave this a listen. Favorite track: Touch-Tone Telephone.

    dietvernors thumbnail
dietvernors The variety of covers is really interesting, and the further he gets away from the original the better. Hearing "Cars" without the synths and a voice that sounds like Gerry Rafferty is the highlight here. Favorite track: CARS.
    Alex B thumbnail
Alex B Rick White doing Pop Muzik is the greatest thing of all time! Favorite track: POP MUZIK.
    andrewthomashunter thumbnail
andrewthomashunter Another great collection and it just happens to have my favorite Blondie song.
Mum passed away in 2017 and she loved this song, hearing one of my favorite artists performing it meant a lot to me. Favorite track: HEART OF GLASS.

30 years on from inspiring suburban kids to start bands in his seminal group Eric's Trip, Rick White, the king of Canadian lo-fi - still kicks out the jams after all these years - still making it look easy. This 80s comp and the 60s one before it are such generous gifts to fans and confirms that yeah, Rick White really is as cool as he seems. Favorite track: GOOD GOOD THINGS.
    The Transcendence Seeker thumbnail
The Transcendence Seeker Digging that Grapes Of Wrath and Blue Rodeo are getting some love on this comp. Favorite track: ROSE COLOURED GLASSES.
    Bruce Grossman thumbnail
Bruce Grossman another great collection starting with the best Husker Du song ever. Then closing it out with some Tom Petty. just awesome. Favorite track: DON'T WANT TO KNOW IF YOU ARE LONELY.

    Secret Curse (Colby) thumbnail
Secret Curse (Colby) Wow this is fantastic! These are all songs I know well (unlike the previous decade collections, where I'm not familiar with all). I guess if anyone could give me appreciation for a Madonna song, Rick was the one who could. Bring on the multi-decade out takes...! Favorite track: TRIGGER CUT.
     thumbnail
Cool to hear Rick doing these songs...particularly the Weezer track. People never believe me when I tell them that I saw THEM open for Eric's Trip back in the day (ANZA Club, Vancouver, Canada) Favorite track: HOLIDAY.
    chuckskullz thumbnail
chuckskullz Proof that while this musical era might not be Rick's most beloved, that he always had a helluva knack for what made the best music of the 90's tick. I absolutely love this. Favorite track: COME IN ALONE.
