  2. Void Mother
    by Obscure Sphinx
    supported by
    Keebler Dilf thumbnail
Keebler Dilf This album is heavy as fuck and one of the reasons I find it near criminal that more people don't widely know their name. Obscure Sphinx fully crushes before rending mind asunder. And the final song is so haunting it cannot be understated. If there's any goddess at all in existence it's whatever inspired them to write this. Favorite track: Waiting For The Bodies Down The River Floating.
    Ippocalyptica thumbnail
Ippocalyptica Sludgy post-metal has its greats: Neurosis effectively started the sub-genre, Isis gave us the all-time best effort in Panopticon, Cult of Luna is consistently excellent (if not quite my cup of tea), and Obscure Sphinx is just about the equal of all of the above, albeit way more under-appreciated. Void Mother is among the best albums of the bunch, and certainly the best from Obscure Sphinx. Heavy, hypnotic, and emotionally resonant, this is great - and it gets better with subsequent listens. Favorite track: The Presence Of Goddess.
    knutepanhead thumbnail
knutepanhead Obscure Sphinx are absolutely AMAZING!! This is a tour-de-force. Nothing but great, heavy, dark songs. If I were going to lay in a tub and bleed out, I'd want "Presence Of Goddes" to be playing as I left this place. This is rare air. Majorly trippy and heavy. Cannot begin to tell you how underrated this fantastic band is. I'd follow them over a cliff. This is what I live for. Favorite track: The Presence Of Goddess.

jlj So tight! Great mix of tracks too; something for everyone! The Masque is steeped in 80s Metallica; love it! Favorite track: The Masque.
    ij13 thumbnail
ij13 For an absolute powerhouse of a sludge band, this entire album is CLEAN!! It's everything you'd expect and want from Monolord, but the sound is more! Favorite track: You Bastard.
    LordRockinghamm thumbnail
LordRockinghamm An absolute banger after a necessary break. The creative juices flow once again - in a river of gnarly heavy fuzz riffs and soaring vocals. Favorite track: Invisible.

    Nqobani T thumbnail
Nqobani T Unlike all their previous releases, this is the first ATW album that had to grow on me, not sure why. It’s a really good album, not just a collection of songs. Favorite track: The Welterweight.
    NikosToolnikc thumbnail
NikosToolnikc Watched AtW live at Athens this autumn - even though it was the last show of their European tour their performance was extraordinary - a fan since the early years - and still one of my top modern rock bands out there - one more great album, all songs are great

PS: guitar solo on Culling Line is a medicine for the soul
    once again, thank you guys

  5. The Moth (Deluxe Edition) [24-bit HD audio]
    by Devin Townsend
    supported by
    Egg Wizard thumbnail
Egg Wizard The lifework of a generational talent. So... grandiose, maximalist and filled to every sonic nook and cranny with Townsend artefacts; thundering guitars, blastbeats, blissful harmonic delays and reverbs, choirs, farts; guest spots from mentor Steve Vai and other Zappa alumni, Anneke, a killer soprano and a choir of 100, and probably God Himself; all explaining the meaning of life (or finding peace with suffering) from his compassionate and emotional perspective. You want fries with that? Favorite track: Stained Hearts.
    erik maronde thumbnail
erik maronde The Moth seems to me like the high point of all I like in his work (until last Friday that was "Empath"). A soundtrack so majestic that no pictures or movie is necessary. To me it produces its own pictures. And I haven't even really listened to the lyrics. Well done Devin, congratulations from a fan since 1993!

    Marcin Wielewski thumbnail
Marcin Wielewski I remember the day when it came out, but I didn't know why people are so excited. Now I'm crazy too. What is love in Earthless that they play forward. Ultimate trippy acid rock. Favorite track: Electric Flame.

    Smekermann thumbnail
Smekermann This is a really unique album in P.O.'s discography. The repetitive approach is similar to their other albums, but this is a much more atmospheric affair thanks to the band's experimentation with acoustics, and "loud silence" (ie. amps cranked to max) being used as drone to their rock.

Skyline is the outlier, in that it's a single riff played for 10 minutes straight. If you do manage to endure, you'll come out cleansed. Other live versions are more approachable, though (Circus). Favorite track: August.
    Kay Smoljak thumbnail
Kay Smoljak Keep hitting that riff Favorite track: Skyline.

Tim Rose Wow dynamic range is even lower than on #1 you guys would sound amazing on decent hifi gear if you record these tracks with a higher DR

    Harold N’Hiver thumbnail
Harold N’Hiver This record is absolutely brilliant, like pretty much everything in Godspeed’s discography.

Godspeed will destroy kapitalism, in the end. Don’t doubt it for a second.
    maxlphillips thumbnail
    maxlphillips RATING: 9.1/10 (9.10)

With a newly refined emphasis on melody, Godspeed’s sixth studio album – whilst being slightly more sonically reserved than previous releases – offers an experience with far more structural cohesion than the releases post-hiatus up until this point. Whilst it’s not their best, this is easily Godspeed’s most overhated project.

BEST SONG: Anthem For No State, Pt. III
WORST SONG: none Favorite track: Anthem For No State, Pt. III.

thewillim I used to think this album was okay at best, one of the weaker releases in GY!BE's discog.
I was wrong. It is peak. Favorite track: “GOVERNMENT CAME” (9980.0kHz 3617.1kHz 4521.0 kHz) / Cliffs Gaze / cliffs’ gaze at empty waters’ rise / ASHES TO SEA or NEARER TO THEE.

    maxlphillips thumbnail
    maxlphillips RATING: 9.2/10 (9.20)

A more pointed political statement than the last few albums – addressing government surveillance and the dichotomy between the people and the state – and it is combined with the beauty of escalating, heavenly sonic ambition to form an acutely atmospheric and emotional record.

BEST SONG: where we break how we shine (ROCKETS FOR MARY)
WORST SONG: none Favorite track: A Military Alphabet (five eyes all blind) (4521.0kHz 6730.0kHz 4109.09kHz) / Job’s Lament / First of the Last Glaciers / where we break how we shine (ROCKETS FOR MARY).
