Look for the helpers. Over the next few weeks, as Australia navigates the downstream effects of the fuel and fertiliser shortage, I think we are going to see exactly that. People showing up for each other. Practical, specific, generous help from people who know things and want to share them. I want to be one of those people. A lot of small businesses, including rural businesses and farming families, are facing a period where so much feels out of their control. The prices. The supply chain. The decisions being made in rooms very far from their paddock or their shopfront. You cannot control all of it. But you can control how you communicate through it. So here is what I have been working on. I wrote a free guide on how to find calm in a crisis. News moderation, finding credible sources, taking care of yourself when the pressure builds. No cost, no catch. I’ll link it in the comments. I also wrote the Crisis and Issues Starter Kit. Everything I know that works, in a practical, fillable document you can work through in a few hours. Scenario planning. Stakeholder mapping. Communication templates ready to adapt and send. Lea Boyce shared thisWe talk a lot about educating the rising generation in family business and we should. But if that education only goes one way, we are missing a huge part of the picture. Rising generations need more than finance, governance and ownership structures. They need the history, the context, the why and an understanding of the family culture around the enterprise. At the same time, current generations also need to understand how younger family members communicate, use new tools, see opportunity and make sense of risk differently. That is where better conversations start. And often where better stewardship starts too. It aligns a family to move forward together even if they all use slightly different paths. Lea Boyce shared thisI have still been reflecting on moments from my recent work trip to Singapore. While enjoying some post meetings time by the pool I finished reading The Travelling Cat Chronicles and cried so hard a stranger came to check on me. Mildly embarrassing! It's a quiet book about a man and his cat and the people who loved them. But really it's about what we leave behind. Who carries us forward. How love doesn't end just because someone does. I kept thinking about families I work with. The founder who built something extraordinary and is now gone. The values that either survived them or didn't. The rising generation stepping into something that is both a gift and a potential weight on their shoulders. Belonging in a family enterprise isn't just about who owns what or who shows up to the board meeting. It's about who carries the thread of what went before and remembering why it mattered. And who keeps prior generations spirit alive in the decisions they make for generations to come. I think about that a lot. The families who really consider this are the ones that I see thriving.

Lea Boyce shared thisI was in a professional discussion recently about intergenerational communication in family enterprise with a group of advisors. Good conversation. Smart people. Plenty of experience. But I found myself thinking we were talking about two different things. Most of the responses came from a corporate mindset. Structure, reporting lines, performance conversations, leadership development frameworks. All useful. All valid. Just not the whole picture when family is involved. Because family enterprise is never only commercial. It carries history and identity. Unspoken expectations. Relationships that existed long before the business and will continue long after any advisor steps away. You can give technically excellent advice in that environment and still have it land poorly if you have not read the human system sitting underneath it. That is not a criticism of corporate advisors. Many do extraordinary work. It is simply a recognition that advising a family enterprise asks for a slightly different lens. Governance absolutely matters. Possibly more, not less. Clear structures help families separate emotion from decision making when they need to. But governance without cultural intelligence can feel clinical. Families sense quickly whether an advisor understands their reality or is applying a template. And intergenerational communication is often where this shows up first. It is rarely about communication technique. More often it is about trust, voice, succession anxiety, perceived fairness or how influence actually flows inside the family. You will not find that on an organisational chart.

Richard and I were reminded how much difference the right travel support makes, particularly when you are travelling for work. I want to acknowledge Rachelle Matheson and the Jigsaw Travel team for taking care of the detail so we could focus on our work. When you are travelling for business, the logistics matter more than people realise. Where you stay, whether the hotel actually works for meetings and knowing things are handled without you needing to think about them makes a big difference to how you show up. This is why working with Rachelle and her team is always invaluable. Everything was easy. The right hotels, the right facilities, thoughtful choices and exceptional service, all quietly handled in the background. And then there are the moments that really stay with you. Rachelle knew we had an anniversary while we were away and made sure we paused long enough to celebrate, even in the middle of a packed work schedule. That level of care is rare. I highly recommend Rachelle and the team at Jigsaw Travel for both business and leisure travel. It is one of those supports you do not realise how much you value until you experience it.

As our CEO Catherine Sayer told Tony McManus on Australia Overnight this morning, family businesses “don’t think in quarters, they think in generations.” That long-term view shapes how family businesses plan, lead, employ, invest and make decisions. It is also why we need better insight into what they are experiencing right now. Catherine joined the program, broadcast on 6PR, 3AW and 5AA, to speak about the Family Business Barometer Survey, supported by Pronto Software. The survey is open to all family businesses and will help us better understand the sector’s successes, challenges, stressors and long-term goals. Most importantly, it will give us stronger evidence to take to government and policymakers, so they can better understand “how family businesses tick.” The conversation also touched on the importance of supporting Australian family businesses, the pressures facing local manufacturers, the value of strong governance and succession planning, and the role of FBA’s education programs, Accredited Advisor network and the upcoming Family Business Conference: Asia Pacific in Hobart.
