It was not King Sephiroth or King Xemnas but Xemnas's advisor, Saïx, who reacted first, standing up so swiftly he overturned his chair. “He's what?”
“Just as I said,” replied Riku. “Prince Roxas has run away.”
“You were trusted with guiding him,” Xemnas stated. “And in response you took your eyes off him and allowed him to escape?”
“You cannot blame me for being incautious. I had no reason to suspect that he would do such a thing.”
“How could you let him escape?” Saïx asked, obviously making an effort to restrain his anger.
“He requested to use the restroom. Forgive me,” said Riku coolly, “for not wishing to go in with him.”
“Peace,” said Sephiroth. “Prince Riku, please explain exactly what has happened.”
Riku turned to his brother. “I was showing Prince Roxas around the castle, just as I was asked to do. We didn't speak much. Later, he asked if he could use the restroom.” He shrugged. “I took him there and waited outside. He was taking a long time, and after several minutes, I knocked on the door and asked if everything was okay. When I received no response, I went inside to check on him. He was gone. There's nothing else to it.”
“Fool,” growled Saïx. “We must search for him immediately.”
“Why would he run away?” Riku asked, trying to seem genuinely curious.
“That is no concern of yours,” Xemnas interjected. “However, Saïx is correct; we should search for him. Turn the castle upside-down if we must.”
“Pardon me, sir, but I think we should look outside. We needn't bother search inside. Nearly all the doors in the castle are locked; he wouldn't be able to get into any rooms,” Riku explained. “And if he escaped through the bathroom window, then it stands to reason that he would no longer be inside the castle, correct?”
“Indeed,” agreed Sephiroth. “In that case, we should—”
Saïx cut in, “Incompetent fool. You know nothing of the what the prince is capable of—”
“I believe it would be wise to search the whole castle,” said Xemnas, cutting his advisor off. “Just to be on the safe side.”
Riku shrugged, feigning indifference. “Whatever suits you.”
“Saïx, please search outside,” ordered Xemnas. “Just circle the area. If we do not find him inside, we can assume he has left the castle grounds.”
“Yes, sir.”
“Come, then, King Xemnas,” said King Sephiroth. “I will go with you from room to room. We can start on this floor.”
“Then, shall I search the next floor?” Riku offered.
“That would—” started Sephiroth.
“He should accompany us,” interrupted Xemnas.
He suspects me. No surprise. “It does not take three to search one floor,” he pointed out.
“Very well,” said Sephiroth, scooting his chair back and standing.
Riku silently thanked his brother for stepping in. As long as they were in Castle Hollow Bastion, Sephiroth would have the last say, and Xemnas wouldn't be able to do anything about it.
Riku left the room and slowly climbed the staircase, thinking. Xemnas would probably insist upon searching the second floor, even if Riku said he'd checked every room. Which meant he had to figure out how to hide Roxas. Outside was a no, because Saïx would be looking for him there. Which meant his only choice might be to...
He hurried back to his room, unlocking it with his Keyblade and quietly shutting the door behind him after he slipped in.
Roxas was sitting on the edge of the large bed, idly thumbing through the pages of some old text he'd probably gotten from the desk. He looked up sharply as Riku entered the room. “What's going on?”
“We're searching the castle for you,” Riku replied off-handedly.
“Oh. Great. So what are we gonna do about it?”
“Still working on that. Xemnas and Sephiroth and searching the bottom floor right now, and Saïx is prowling around outside.”
“So, what you're saying is, we're screwed.”
Riku grinned at him sheepishly. “Pretty much, yeah.” As Roxas flopped back on the bed with an over-exaggerated sigh, he added, “Sorry, I didn't exactly think this through.”
“Yeah, I figured,” muttered Roxas.
