'"I've wanted to be a business owner for as long as I can remember. I love being able to generate ideas, implement them effectively and see the results. I saw my first crepe stall on a family holiday at the age of 15 and it stuck in my head that that’s what I wanted to do. It all started with one crepe plate and a table going around to fairs and craft events and it’s now expanded to two live crepe bars, a catering trailer and a cafe with 10 crepe plates in just two years. It doesn't all happen overnight, in the past I expected immediate results and jumped in feet first but now I realize the planning stage is most important. Running your own business is a roller coaster of emotions. There will be ups, downs and lots of changes in direction, but work hard through the down times and you’ll enjoy the good times even more."

'"I wanted to start my own business because I love creating things from scratch. I remember the day we sold our first pair of shoes and realized our business was real. We started our company in October 2014 and our first challenge was to convince the bigger brands to sell their products in a new store with no track record that wasn’t even online. Now we are able to sell thousands of shoes, increase brand awareness and generate confidence for our customers who are young, urban and very interested in fashion, music and art. The main difference between working for others and having your own company? You can’t learn from your boss, so you have to learn from other companies. The best thing about running your own business is that you have no limits. You work harder and better."

'“My father was a farmer and after studying business I got involved in a few startups before deciding to launch a technology startup of my own—in agriculture. When I spoke to farmers they said that paperwork and efficiency were big pain points for them. That’s why we created a productivity and data analytics app that farmers can take with them into the field to record their activities, then the data to make better decisions and increase efficiency. A year ago, there were just five of us; today we’re a team of 19 people, including tester farmers on the ground. Of course there have been challenges along the way, but having great people around you is the best way to overcome them. We’re in this together, committed to bringing farmers technology that helps them flourish—whether they’re in Navarra or Nevada. We recognized that we have a huge opportunity ahead of us and we’ve embraced it as a team. We’re ‘all in’.”

'“It’s all about the tiny details. I’d always wanted to create unique handbags for people who value one-off, vintage-inspired designs—the exact people I had in mind when I designed my first collection. The brand was less than a year old when I opened the doors to our atelier in Barcelona. It’s important to me to give each customer personal attention and to tell the story behind specific designs. The space was created to feel cosy, vintage and a little bit magical; it makes me so happy to see my shop and products making customers feel unique and special. Building Cosas de Toton has made me realize that nothing is impossible. I’ve learned to be patient, not to rush and to never forget that the small details really do make all the difference.”

'"As a child I was really into cooking and food. Instead of being glued to cartoons on TV, I watched cooking shows. From the age of 14 I worked in different restaurants and learned a lot, but I always dreamed of having my own restaurant. The name Bomenpark means ‘tree park’ — we’re situated at the edge of a nature reserve and the surroundings are a huge inspiration. It was a big decision to take the leap, but once I’d decided, things went really fast. In just three years we’ve grown and matured into a business with over 50 employees. Owning a business is a 24-7 lifestyle. Sometimes it can be challenging, but the rewards are great. I’m doing what I love, which is making our customers happy. My ambitions are pretty simple: I want to grow as a person and for my restaurant to keep giving our guests the best experience possible. It’s important to remember to keep on investing in yourself, not just your business, so that you have plenty to give as you follow your dream."

'"We had a burning desire to start our own business—the entrepreneurial lifestyle really appealed. We started out selling wristwatches online and used Facebook to market our products. Being young, we didn’t have much money but Facebook worked perfectly for us and we got really good at running inexpensive campaigns that brought good returns. Then we started helping close friends out with their ads and one day we just looked at each other and said, “this is a lot more fun, don’t you think?” so we decided to do it full time. There were gaps in our knowledge, so we sat down and learned everything we could about Facebook advertising, working into the night and then putting the theory into practice. Now, as a Facebook marketing agency, our customers range from very small local businesses to huge national online stores that have thousands of orders every month. We started in a garage and just moved out and into an office where we now have 2 employees and we're looking for our 3rd – all within the first year! Our mantra is to always help other people and to be humble. Don’t work for the dollar, work for the experience. We live by that, every day."

'"It all started with a holiday in LA. We saw frozen yoghurt everywhere and my daughters kept asking why there is no frozen yoghurt in Holland. It’s the land of cows, milk and yoghurt, after all! It got me thinking, so together with my sister Mei Lan and designer Alrik we started Frozz, experimenting at our tasting lab in Amsterdam and making frozen yoghurt with milk from Dutch cows. It’s fresh, delicious and healthy; we have fun with it and our customers get to be part of the story by giving feedback on new flavors and creating their own combinations from the range of toppings on offer. Our loyal customers are the most powerful ambassadors we possibly could hope for. Building up the business has been an adventurous journey—there are always challenges, but you have to push against the boundaries. Then you look back and think, “Wow, look what we did!”

'"Veloretti came about by accident, really. I was looking for a new city bike but most were either too expensive, poor quality, or simply dull. So the idea came to me to create and produce a timeless design that would still be perceived as elegant 10 years from now. We sell our bikes directly to our clients via our website, to keep prices affordable. My business consumes every minute of every day, but it’s an amazing feeling to realize that someone appreciates your product and thinks it’s worth spending their hard-earned money on. We’re now aiming to move into new European markets and are also excited to be planning mini versions and getting to know a whole new market of young cyclists. Running a business is a bit like learning to ride a bike—challenging at first, but over time you gain confidence, freedom and enjoy the thrill of the ride you're on!"
