Apple‘s Job Creation in Europe

Throughout our history, we have created entirely new products — and entirely new industries — by focusing on innovation. This has resulted in nearly 630,000 European jobs at Apple and at developers and businesses supported by Apple. In addition, the App Store has created hundreds of thousands of jobs that previously did not exist in the European economy, enabling developers to launch new companies and earn $6.5 billion from App Store sales worldwide.

The App Economy

With more than 1.2 million apps and over 75 billion downloads, the App Store has created an entirely new industry: iOS app design and development.
Since we ignited the app revolution in 2008, roughly 500,000 jobs have been created in Europe that are directly attributable to the App Store. Of the more than $20 billion developers have earned from App Store sales worldwide, $6.5 billion has been paid to European developers. This job growth for coders, developers, entrepreneurs, and others would not have existed without Apple’s innovation and technology. We also provide app developers with the tools and distribution they need to bring their best ideas to hundreds of millions of iOS customers worldwide through the incredible App Store.
In 2014 the overall app economy is expected to deliver $16.5 billion in revenues to EU GDP, and this contribution is growing at a rate of 12% per year. Globally, the app economy will add an estimated $86 billion in revenues to worldwide GDP in 2014.2

The App Store has enabled us to grow our team and revenue, and is unrivaled in helping UK start-ups like us get an edge in competitive markets.”
- Harry Jones, co-founder, Top10.com
“Without the App Store I wouldn't have the foundation I needed to turn a game I created as a hobby into an extremely successful business that competes on a global scale. Plague Inc. is one of the most successful paid mobile games ever and we are now a growing company with five full-time employees, a central London office, over 25 million customers worldwide, and a significant revenue stream. Spotlight on Cork

Apple is proud to have been doing business in Cork, Ireland since 1980. We have grown our workforce to roughly 4,000 employees, who serve our customers through distribution, manufacturing, tech support, and other critical functions. These employees play an important part in Apple’s success and continued growth in Ireland.
  • About 10 percent of Apple’s worldwide corporate employees are in Cork (excluding Apple Retail).
  • Apple is Cork’s largest private employer, the senior management is Irish, and most have been with Apple for over two decades.
  • Apple’s investment in Cork supports over 2,500 additional jobs locally providing services such as facilities, catering, security, recruitment, printing, fulfillment, and maintenance.
  • .
We are thrilled to continue expanding in Cork with our new facility. The building is in the process of being certified with the “Excellent” rating according to BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method), the leading international standard for best practice in sustainable building.

Environmental Background on Our New Cork Facility

Spotlight on Supplier Partners

Seele

German manufacturer Seele creates the glass Apple uses in retail stores and other buildings across five continents. With over 1,000 employees, the company is widely recognized for having some of the best engineering talent and most advanced aluminum, steel, and glass fabrication in the world. Seele has worked with Apple on more than 60 stores, including the iconic glass cube design of the Fifth Avenue store in New York City. Seele is also providing glass and design work for the amazing Apple Campus 2 under construction in Cupertino. Since Apple began working with Seele in 2001 the partnership has pushed glass fabrication and design to an entirely new level, including advancements that have made it possible to create glass panels in sizes never before produced.

Berlin Retail Restoration

Many of Europe's most memorable Apple Stores are located in historic buildings that have been meticulously restored to reflect their former glory. Some of these buildings endured decades of neglect. Apple employs local artisans, vendors, and contractors who understand the materials and architectural period details. For many of its stores, Apple works painstakingly to restore buildings in a way that honors the rich heritage of the locations where we operate.
For our store on the Ku'damm in Berlin, we sourced the original Kirchheimer Muschelkalk stone from a quarry near Kirchheim. The stone was installed by Gebauer, a multigenerational family business based in Berlin. The interior’s signature charred plaster works were done by Ettenheim's Marko GmbH.

bennett

For nearly 100 years, Bennett has been building large-scale projects delivering some of the most technologically advanced construction services in the world. Bennett helped build Apple's Cork campus and is overseeing the current expansion and renovation of a number of projects on the campus.
We wanted to create one of the few BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) “Excellent” sustainable buildings in Ireland, and Bennett’s expertise has been instrumental in achieving that. The new Cork facility features environmentally friendly capabilities such as renewable energy solar panels, rainwater harvesting, twin wall facades, enhanced insulation, energy efficient heating and cooling, and smart lighting systems.

‘MEMS’ Manufacturing and Development

Many of the Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) in Apple products are designed and manufactured in Europe. Measured in microns, MEMS components help power the sensors and audio capabilities that are critical to making our products simple and intuitive to use. We work closely with our European partners to develop, produce and package the advanced MEMS technology found in every iOS device. The manufacturing and sourcing associated with these components has resulted in thousands of jobs across six countries.

Apple Premium Resellers

There are over 580 Apple Premium Resellers across Europe that offer the complete range of Apple products — Mac, iPhone, iPad, and iPod, plus a full complement of software and accessories — so customers can find everything they need in one place that is devoted exclusively to Apple.
Each Apple Premium Reseller employs a varying number of people. Taking a conservative estimate of four employees per store means that an additional 2,320 people are employed in Apple-related retail stores.
  1. App economy jobs and economic contributions are based on research by Vision Mobile, "The European App Economy," July 2014.
  2. Analysis Group analyzed Apple’s impact on the European job market and economy by using information on the total amount Apple spent on goods and services in Europe in 2013, and applying that information to Type-1 employment multipliers calculated based on data from the European Systems of Accounts (Eurostat). The chosen bill-of-goods approach, which relies on a detailed break-down of Apple’s purchases from input suppliers, improves the accuracy of the estimates compared to traditional methods typically used in economic impact studies. These numbers do not include any additional jobs that have resulted from the increased spending of individuals and households whose income is directly or indirectly tied to Apple’s economic activity.
