This past Friday, YouTube brought together the worlds of live sports, creators and music into one incredible cultural moment in São Paulo for the NFL’s first Friday game of the 2025 season. Our first National Football League (NFL) broadcast between the Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs attracted massive audiences — breaking the record for the most concurrent views of a live stream on YouTube! And we streamed it for free, globally, no additional log-ins or subscriptions required. We blended the best of traditional live sports with the unfiltered energy and creativity of our YouTube creator community to create a unique and immersive experience for fans. Top creators, including Deestroying and Kay Adams, provided commentary and analysis alongside Rich Eisen and Kurt Warner. And the power of YouTube’s artist community was on full display as KAROL G, with 40 million subscribers and over 30 billion views on her YouTube channel, delivered an amazing half-time performance. This historic night was a landmark in our partnership with the NFL and a demonstration of what the future of live events on YouTube looks like. Fans want an experience that's more innovative, interactive, and authentic, and we are uniquely positioned to offer them that. It was also a historic night for our Watch With feature, as we hosted four additional live streams from IShowSpeed, Tom Grossi, Robegrill and SKabeche, so fans could watch the game with their favorite creator as a commentator. We then kept Friday’s momentum going into a successful kick-off weekend for NFL Sunday Ticket. Thank you to our partners at the NFL — we’re looking forward to making our third season our best yet! Over the years, I have seen how innovation and fandom have shaped the media landscape, and no one brings these worlds together quite like YouTube. Friday’s game was a testament to that and to the countless teams at YouTube who make it the best place for creators, artists, partners and viewers. A massive congratulations to everyone who made this possible. The future of sports is here, and it’s on YouTube!

We’re helping to unlock the mysteries of the universe with AI. 🌌 Our novel Deep Loop Shaping method could help astronomers observe more events like collisions and mergers of black holes in greater detail. Here’s how. ⬇️ Measuring gravitational waves is fundamental to helping us understand the dynamics and formation of the universe. But the instruments we use to do this - observatories - are extremely sensitive and prone to disturbances. Our system helps stabilize components within these tools, reducing noise and improving control in an observatory’s feedback system. Developed in collaboration with LIGO Laboratory, Caltech and the GSSI - Gran Sasso Science Institute we’re excited to see our Deep Loop Method push the boundaries of what’s currently possible in astrophysics. We hope our work can influence the design of future observatories, both on Earth and in space. Find out more → https://goo.gle/4n7y5fm

There are a number of important questions on AI and energy that we’re working on at Google: How do we use AI to increase energy efficiency? How do we leverage AI to help address environmental and climate challenges? Can those approaches and their beneficial impact be scaled globally? At the same time, a key question is the amount of energy needed to use generative AI tools and apps, and if it can be reduced. To help answer this question, my colleagues and I did the math on the energy, carbon and water footprint per Gemini prompt. This is an area where state of the art is rapidly evolving, but we believe a clear understanding is important to enable us and others to continue to improve efficiency. Here’s a quick summary: We estimate the median Gemini App text prompt uses 0.24 watt-hours (Wh) of energy, emits 0.03 grams of carbon dioxide equivalent (gCO2e), and consumes 0.26 milliliters (or about five drops) of water. One way to explain the per prompt energy impact is that it's equivalent to watching TV for less than 9 seconds. We’re sharing our findings and methodology in our Technical Paper (link below) aiming to encourage industry-wide progress on more comprehensive reporting on the energy use of AI. We’ve been making rapid ongoing progress on the efficiency of our AI systems. Over a period of 12 months, as we continued to deliver higher-quality responses using more capable models, the median energy consumption and carbon footprint per Gemini Apps text prompt decreased by factors of 33x and 44x, respectively. All this thanks to our full stack approach to AI development, our latest data-center efficiencies, decades of experience serving software at scale (details in Technical Paper) – and the work of many teams at Google.  To be clear, there is much more still to do. We’re continuing to improve efficiency at every layer of our operations (hardware, software, models, data centers), and we’re continuing to invest in energy infrastructure, grid improvements, and clean energy (existing tech and next-gen initiatives such as geothermal and nuclear). Thanks to my co-authors on this study Cooper Elsworth Tim Huang, Dave Patterson, Ian Schneider, Robert Sedivy, Savannah Goodman, Ben Townsend, Partha Ranganathan, Jeff Dean, Amin Vahdat, Ben Gomes.
