Pinned Tweet1. “…flames in every direction.” This is on the Taliban for pushing for miltiary solution by trampling the people. On U.S. for abandoning a people so cruelly. But as much on leaders who, in their disconnected bubbles, refused to wake up, wasted time, left the people vulnerable

Mujib Mashal RetweetedAt the Chaman/Spin Boldak border crossing, thousands of Afghans entered Pakistan on Tuesday, many of them medical patients or freed Taliban prisoners returning home to their relatives,

Amrullah Saleh’s embassy in Tajikistan asks Interpol to arrest Ashraf Ghani, Muheb, Fazly. When we get a chance to breath, we will get to the full extent of humiliation and disaster they brought on a people. How can they live with themselves?Show this thread

This appears like it’s at Dr. Abdullah’s home. Still difficult to wake up to the true extent of the pace of change…

The lives saved: from 50-100 deaths a day to close-to-zero direct war casualties (only reported casualties is chaos at airport). But there’s fear, suffocation. Taliban leaders have opportunity to help build a system that respects people’s way of life like other Islamic countries

Mujib Mashal RetweetedIn Bamyan of Afghanistan, the Taliban exploded a statue of Abdul Ali Mazari, a leader of Hazara ethnic group who was killed by the Taliban in 1996, said local people. For Hazaras, Mazari is a champion in the long Afghan war.

For context on how the Taliban got here, the 20-year arch of their insurgency,
@jimhuylebroek and I did a deep look last year. -
The Taliban, in their first message since returning to Kabul, said there would be no reprisals against anyone: “from today onward, war is over.” But it will take more than words to quell fear griping large parts of Afghanistan. Need to show in action.

Mujib Mashal RetweetedOn Taliban & women rights: important to remain focused on legal rights and next steps for existing legal rights of women. That should be the baseline. Behavior/practice can change overnight & tends to be context specific/varied by province, local “authorities” etc
-
Mujib Mashal Retweeted“Martyrdom is my pride,” said Atta. “I will not leave this country,” said Dostum. "I will not escape,” said Ghani. "We will not leave,” said Mohib. And Atmar, Mohaqiq, etc. etc.

In his first press conference the Taliban’s chief spox Zabibullah Mujahid very conciliatory — emphasizes complete amnesty. On women rights: “there will be no violence against women, no prejudice,” can study and work, but repeats the vague caveat “within bounds of Islamic law”

Reporter asks Mujahid: this seat you are sitting in right now Meenapal sat there last week. You claimed responsibility for his killing. Was this just about power? He says the war was declared by Afghan gov which had publicly announced prep for 6 months fighting.
-
Quite the moment: After Mujahid says Taliban have announced all encompassing amnesty, Afghan reporter asks — do you think the people of Afghanistan will forgive you too for the explosions and suicide bombings? Mujahid’s response: “colateral damage” happens.

Zabibullah Mujahid, the taliban’s behind-the-scenes voice for nearly 20 years, appearing for first time in front of a house packed of Afghanistan’s vibrant media (one of biggest achievements of past 20 years)

Mujib Mashal RetweetedWe are committed to supporting the people of
#Afghanistan. The humanitarian needs are huge from weeks of heavy fighting. Thousands were injured, while hospitals were damaged or destroyed. We will not reduce our presence. We have worked here for 30 years. We will not stop now. -
Mujib Mashal RetweetedSomeone named himself Mullah Ahmadi said he is incharge of Kabul security came to my building parking area and forcedly drove my armored car with him. This is my own vehicle with valid and proper papers. https://twitter.com/bsarwary/status/1427570142179909633 …

Think about it: US has more troops in
now (albeit different mission) than before Biden reckless way of withdrawal helped fuel collapse & prevented orderly transition.
But a point to be made: status quo was sustaining what got exposed as a house of cards addicted to dependence -
