FAILURE to share even the broad outline of an exit strategy and a planning timeline suggests the government doesn’t have one, or is to frightened to share it with the public
-
MINISTERS keep trying to avoid spelling out an exit strategy by presenting a false choice, but demanding an exit strategy is about wanting sensible and holistic policy making
-
EXIT STRATEGY is not a choice between epidemic control or easing the lockdown to restart the economy, it’s about doing both, and striking a sensible balance:
-
MINISTER
@MattHancock should spend less time threatening to punish everyone and more time working on how to get us out of the lockdown back to some semblance of normality. That’s a big task and needs less time in TV studios and more thinking and administration -
IF YOU want everyone to observe the lockdown, which is likely to be extended far beyond the three weeks you promised, you need to articulate a clear strategy: including success metrics, exit strategy, measures you will take to boost care capacity and how you’ll restart economy
-
SO cut the lectures and threats minister and start showing some respect for the big efforts almost everyone is making. Positive encouragement rather than threats more likely to sustain the effort needed
-
IF
@MattHancock wants to confine everyone to their homes all the time, including those with no garden, he’ll fracture the impressive social consensus and end up relying far more heavily on state coercion, which will only encourage more low-level non-compliance -
SOCIAL DISTANCING has so far been a huge success, reducing transmission and infection rates enormously, according to the governments own advisers. And it has been achieved by public health messaging and social enforcement rather than state coercion. The effort has been enormous
-
MATT HANCOCK needs to pipe down. As someone who has carefully observed all the social distancing rules for three weeks now, I resent his constant criticism and threats to punish everyone for the transgressions of the few:

Some of those disagreements are on public display this weekend, with contrasting briefings from Ferguson (Radio Four Today) and Medley (The Times):
-
It would also clarify the options and choices being presented to ministers that they must make on our behalf so it affects everyone not just the data nerds
-
Even from outside, it’s clear that there have been and are some very strong disagreements with profound policy implications. In future, this be central to a public inquiry or royal commission. But much of it is occasionally visible now and would make an outstanding article

Scientific advice is not usually monolithic and the public health community seems to be offering a range of views and advice; I’d like to know more about who has advised what and when to whom
