Book overview
Or not.
In DRAGONESQUE, the latest fantastic anthology from Zombies Need Brains, you finally get to experience all that awfulness from the dragon’s point of view. And what if it isn’t necessarily that awful? What if the princess wants to be kidnapped, or the dragon is tired of being made fun of week after week at the Renaissance Faire? Or maybe a dragonet just really, really wants to be a unicorn? Perhaps they’re happiest collecting art, or enjoy being tattooed? Or maybe some dragons like putting out fires more than starting them…unless they absolutely have to? DRAGONESQUE features sixteen original stories from such fiery authors as Esther M. Friesner, Madeline Dau, Niall Spain, Russell Hugh McConnell, Grace Eliza, Mike Jack Stoumbos, Paul D. Smith, Jean Marie Ward, Gerald Brandt, Gini Koch & Bebe Bayliss, Larry Ivkovich, Barbara Campbell, Journey Sloane, Em McDermott, Auston Habershaw, and David B. Coe.
See the world as the dragons see it, from the delightfully delicious to the tastefully transactional. Welcome to DRAGONESQUE.
About the authors
Follow authors to get new release updates, plus improved recommendations.Jean Marie Ward writes fiction, nonfiction and everything in between. Five of the eleven new stories in her well-reviewed first collection of short fiction, DRAGONS, CATS, AND FORMIDABLE FEMMES (Ginger Blue Publishing) made TANGENT ONLINE's 2024 list of Recommended Reads. Her other short fiction publication credits span the alphabet from ASIMOV'S SCIENCE FICTION MAGAZINE to the anthologies of Zombies Need Brains. Her first novel, WITH NINE YOU GET VANYR (written with the late Teri Smith) finaled in both the science fiction/fantasy and humor categories of the 2008 Indie Awards.
Her first art book, ILLUMINA: THE ART OF J.P. TARGETE, provided an in-depth look at award-winning artist J.P. Targete’s covers and conceptual art. Her second nonfiction title, FANTASY ART TEMPLATES, marries the superb illustrations of artist Rafi Adrian Zulkarnain with pithy descriptions of over one hundred fifty creatures and characters from science fiction, fantasy, folklore and myth.
A former assistant producer of the local access cable TV program MYSTERY READERS CORNER, Ms. Ward edited the respected webzine CRESCENT BLUES for eight years and co-edited UNCONVENTIONAL FANTASY, a six-volume collection of fiction, non-fiction, and art celebrating the fortieth anniversary of World Fantasy Con. She has also contributed interviews and articles for publications as diverse as the then SciFi Channel’s SCIENCE FICTION WEEKLY, the bestselling military strategy volume STRATEGY STRIKES BACK, GALAXY'S EDGE MAGAZINE, Romance Writers of America’s ROMANCE WRITERS REPORT and BUZZYMAG.
Gini Koch started writing in the American Southwest as something to do in between staring at pictures of good-looking leading men, but now sweats out the words, both literally and figuratively, in Hotlanta and dreams of dry heat.
She has over 70 titles but is best known for her bestselling, award-winning Alien/Katherine "Kitty" Katt series from DAW Books, which started with Touched by an Alien and has sixteen books out currently, with seventeen through twenty on the way.
Gini's made the most of multiple personality disorder by writing under a variety of other pen names as well, including G.J. Koch (the Alexander Outland series), Anita Ensal, Jemma Chase, A.E. Stanton (the New West Series and the Legend of Belladonna series), and J.C. Koch, and all her various personas have stories featured in excellent anthologies, available now and upcoming. No matter what length – from science fiction, fantasy, paranormal, space opera, urban fantasy, horror, mystery, thriller, dystopian, westerns, romantic suspense, weird west, and more – if it's genre, she writes it.
She's an avid follower of pop culture, comics, and anything and everything animated. She guests, exhibits, and panels frequently at cons across the U.S., large and small, because if there's one thing that she likes (and you can be sure that there is) it's getting to run her yap and interact with fans.
She still has the most wonderful and patient husband in the world, a remarkably supportive family who don't mind that she spends most of her time in other worlds, and she remains inspired mainly by good-looking leading men. She's also inspired by the need to keep her Canine Death Squad and Killer Kitties in kibble and treats because they're both her cheering squad and one of her main distractions (and all the furred beasts say sorry not sorry about that).
