How Does It Work?

Not familiar or never used a strobe tuner? No problem!

Every Peterson strobe tuner is a genuine strobe tuner that allows you to achieve extreme tuning resolution due to the nature of its display - placing it into 'strobe mode' is not required. In fact, the displays inside every one of our products provide the same tuning feedback as our renowned mechanical tuning strobes; more commonly referred to as 'spinning wheel' strobes.

Watch our 'Why Peterson' video series for greater detail on how our products work and what they can do for you and your instrument.

When the Display...

  • Moves to the Left - your tuning is flat.
  • Moves to the Right - your tuning is sharp.
  • The faster the display scrolls, the further you are from tune.
  • The tuning bands will slow and begin to lock the closer you come into tune.
  • When the tuning bands momentarily stop just after the attack of the note, the note is in tune.

    The Benchmark Of All-Instrument Tuners

You don't have to look further for the "best" tuner; this is it! If you need a spot-on tuner, that will work on your bass-guitar, regular acoustic or electric guitar, or even your flute or clarinet, then this is the one to get. I have tried it on all of these, and it provides perfect tune in all. I've owned tuners from almost all major manufacturers, and while some come close to the Strobo-clip HD, none have been able to match its speed, accuracy and legibility. It's fantastic to have no lag-time in display, or doubt about which direction to turn the tuning knobs, or in the case of my clarinet, how far in or out to adjust the mouthpiece for a perfect B-flat reference tone. Likewise, for my flute, which on occasion requires a check of the mouthpiece tube/body insertion point. I was hesitant to spend more than the usual amount for a tuner, but some others are nearly as expensive, yet are not nearly as good. I've read a very few bad reviews, but when the source was considered, I realized I had to try a Strobo-Clip for myself. I'm extremely delighted that I did. Now I have a benchmark with which to calibrate all my other tuners, which are mostly of the sound-hole type (Korg Rim-Clip and a smaller one from D'Addario). These can work well on-stage, but can be fussy about where they are placed on the sound hole. Not so with the Strobo-Clip, which works anywhere you can clip it on.!

Well, nuff said, take a chance (and with Amazon's easy return policy there is no real difficulty) and try one for yourself... You'll probably come to the same conclusion I did; why didn't I buy a Strobo-Clip years ago? The other features of this product are also great (like sweetened tuning and altered tuning, but honestly, it is alone worth the price just to have the easy of use, and accuracy it provides.

Consider poor ratings of this tuner as either extremely rare instances of an issue with the tuner, or more often, improper operation by the end-user. I have had no issues, and the battery-life is certainly as good as any other tuner I've ever had. That is to say, turn it off when you're done; don't wait for auto-shutdown. All in all it'l the best clip-on tuner money can buy, and a bargain when that is considered.

I never knew my guitar was capable of sounding so in tune

Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2020
Brief content visible, double tap to read full content.

This thing has literally transformed my acoustic guitar. I've never used a tuner. While I can tune 2 notes in perfect unison, I've never fully gotten to grips with the inherent tuning problems of guitars - particularly my acoustic with its non adjustable bridge. I'm always re-tuning to "sweeten" the sound depending on where I am on the neck. I'm never satisfied. If the open E sounds great, the open D sounds like garbage and so on. Moving higher up the neck, things are even worse. Tune for high positions, low positions sound like garbage. I'd actually begun to think that the problem was more serious, that my guitar's intonation was just junk. And then I read about James Taylor's "sweetened" tuning, and the fact that it was a preset in this tuner sealed the deal.

First thing I did when I received the Peterson was to try the sweetened acoustic preset. No need to think about how many cents to detune particular strings, it just reconfigures what those strings should be - you just get the strobe to a standstill as you normally would. The tuner is very accurate and responsive, and I was able to get each string bang on target. Played a few open chords. Every one of them sounded in tune. Played some barre chords higher up the neck. Same thing. Played some high position chords that have open strings mixed in. Any conflict was barely noticeable (usually it's horrendous on my guitar). I played the thing for hours in absolute bliss, without once thinking "damn that sounds a little off."

The thing even has a setting to sweeten DADGAD - a favorite tuning of mine which again I've always had trouble getting a "stable" tuning with. Tuned to the Peterson sweetened version, it just sounded incredible everywhere. Apparently you can also create your own presets for other tunings, which I'll explore in the future.

If that weren't enough, it also deals with another long standing frustration of mine - playing with a capo. You always have to make some tuning adjustments, and luckily the Peterson has a capo offset function so that you can still apply the sweetening preset to a capoed instrument. Unsurprisingly, this triggered another couple of hours of blissful playing as I enjoyed the sweet sound of a perfectly tuned 7th fret capoed guitar.

With all that in mind, I would probably be prepared to excuse any fiddliness in the design (others have complained), but luckily I didn't find it very fiddly. Once I worked out how to position the clamp and the arm to get the screen facing you the right way up (harder than it looked for me!), I found the buttons reasonable to use. Yes they're tiny, but they're always gonna be tiny on a clip-on tuner. There's only 3 of them so it's never an issue to feel them out with your finger. The display is clear and functional, absolutely no issues with it at all.

No, they're not exactly cheap as tuners go, but I'm completely happy with the value considering the quality and what it's done for my guitar. Excellent!

Fantastic accuracy, easy to read, Peterson Connect and firmware updates make it very useful

Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2017
Brief content visible, double tap to read full content.
Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

First, one of the advantages of this tuner is that the firmware can be updated. I can't underscore it enough. They had a firmware update recently. I received the tuner a few days ago and immediately updated the firmware with the Peterson Connect web app. The update included an 80% improvement in boot up time...if you go on multiple sites to read reviews of this new tuner that was a major complaint...now solved. They worked on button presses and such as well. Many of the complaints I've read have been solved. Peterson does not come out with new equipment often...I feel confident they will continue to improve the firmware over time. I am having no problems navigating the tuner or using the buttons, etc. The boot up time is comparablec to my other tuners.

I really like how you can reorder the different tunings. I play a number of different instruments and having the relevant sweetened tunings all at the top arranged in frequency of use is great.

I have a number of other tuners: TC's Polytune Clip, Korg's Sledgehammer Pro, Planet Waves NS Micro, and a few Snarks. My previous favorite was the Sledgehammer Pro. It is the BEST tuner for the money - same .1 cent accuracy as Peterson, just no sweetened tunings. If you don't need sweetened tunings and just want a dead accurate, easy to read tuner, go for the Sledgehammer Pro or better yet the Sledgehammer Custom Shop (which took care of the fussy dial problem the original Pro had). They are less expensive and perform VERY well.

I got a lovely early 90's Yairi 12 string and wanted to try a sweetened tuning. With the drop in price for the holiday season I thought I'd give this one a try. So glad I did! Works fantastic and the sweetened tuning helps this well-crafted 12 string sing especially well.

Now this one is on my 12 string, a Pro is on my upright bass, and TC is on on whatever 6 string I'm playing most right now. The Snarks are only used when I go to an outside jam and don't want to take any chances of losing a nice tuner.

The StroboClip HD is an especially good tuner for multi instrumentalists who are fussy about tuning.

I have used for years an IntelliTouch PT10 clip on tuner. It is pretty good at guitar capture but not so good on bass guitar low E string. I tried this tuner which is highly touted. It probably is a bit better at showing precise tuning on my guitar and the stopping the motion display is easy to use. The "sweetening" feature is totally silly in my opinion and using it, my chords sounded sour to my ears. I think probably this is nonsense. This tuner really was MUCH better at capturing and tuning the low E string of my bass guitar, For that reason I will keep it. Oh, the angling choices for seeing the tuner are MUCH better than my old one. The display is plenty bright. But I would be careful of the articulating arm. It looks a bit fragile and is connected by a tiny screw which I believe will need to be checked occasionally to see that it does not loosen and come apart. Overall the device is good even though it is expensive.

EDIT 1/10/25: I have grown to really like its accuracy and ease of use on my guitar. The stopping the motion feature is very easy to use and seems much more accurate than my previous tuner. Now I would definitely recommend it.

    Super Sweet Tool !

I have been playing guitar for over sixty years and perfect tuning is always a challenge. At least it used to be!

A word of advice - approach it with a bit of patience, especially at the beginning, and you will have a perfectly tuned guitar the first chord that you play. The screen rotates left when the string is flat and right when it's sharp. The goal is to have it absolutely still with no rotation at all.

I had to hold the button what seemed like forever to turn on my old tuner and the same to turn the stupid thing off. Push the button on this one and it instantly lights up and is ready to go.

Also, it is very compact, so no problem at all leaving the tuner attached to the guitar in the case. I live in the desert and have to have the guitars in their cases or they will dry out and break apart! :(

This one is highly adjustable and very easy to aim directly toward you, so you don't have to strain to see it. I have to send one back that would only function parallel to the guitar neck, no adjustability, which means somebody would have to tell you if it was in tune or not. 🤷‍♂️

I can't imagine anyone not being happy with this one. I read a complaint I believe about the little arm that holds the screen to the clip being thin and eventually will break. But there is no reason to twist the screen once you have set it because like I say it is compact and will easily go into the case in the usable position. So that little arm doesn't have to have any twisting going on. Should last forever.

The Peterson StroboClip HD Clip-On Tuner is a must-have accessory for musicians of all levels, (I'm a guitarist) and it truly stands out in the world of tuners. Here are some of the features that made this tuner my top choice, after a long period of looking over my options:

First of all: Price. Look at the price of the larger units.

    No. Just - No.

Guitar/Bass adjustments: Spare yourself the torture of trying to get that perfect intonation with a standard tuner. The strobe tuner will give you what you're after, every single time. I wouldn't even attempt it with anything else.

Precision Tuning: The StroboClip HD offers incredibly accurate tuning with a precision of ±0.1 cent. This level of accuracy is essential for musicians who really need to be in tune, especially when recording, or working with other musicians you want to stay friends with! A fine strobe tuner like this ensures that every note is perfectly in tune.

Wide Tuning Range: This tuner supports a broad range of instruments, from guitars and basses to violins and ukuleles. It even accommodates alternate tunings, making it versatile enough for various musical styles and preferences.

High-Definition Display: The bright, easy-to-read HD display is a standout feature. It provides clear visual feedback, allowing you to see your tuning status at a glance, even in low-light conditions. The strobe display mode is particularly helpful for precise tuning, giving you a visual representation of how close you are to being in tune. It took me very little getting use to.

Clip-On Design: The compact and lightweight clip-on design makes it incredibly convenient to use. It securely attaches to your instrument, allowing for hands-free tuning. Plus, its small size means it can easily fit in your gig bag or pocket.

Long Battery Life: The StroboClip HD is designed for longevity, with a battery life that can last for up to 24 hours of continuous use. This means you can rely on it for extended practice sessions or performances without worrying about running out of power. (You'll be especially glad for this if you gig or practice like a beast!)

User-Friendly Interface: This is a completely intuitive interface, and it makes it easy for musicians of all skill levels to use. With just a few clicks, you can switch between tuning modes and settings, making it a hassle-free experience.

Durable Build: Constructed with high-quality materials, the StroboClip HD is built to withstand the punishment of regular use. Whether you're practicing at home or performing on stage, you can trust that this tuner will hold up. Fumble-fingers here can personally vouch for it!

Affordable Quality: Given its advanced features and precision, the StroboClip HD offers exceptional value for money. It’s an investment that pays off in the form of improved tuning accuracy and overall performance. I wouldn't be without it, and I'm giving this 5 well-earned stars!

    Still the King

Remember when owning a Peterson Strobe was the mark of a pro technician? Before the Boss TU's and onwards to the ubiquitours sharks and Shark knock offs? I do. And we learned to tune by ear, that's all there was but we also knew there was a big advantage to the speed, silence and knowledge that especially if we were all using Bosses, that we'd be in tune to each other so we bought them and we bought them all, the TU,s the Korg DT's that put a light show in our racks. However if we were serious about accuracy we went back to the perterson on the bench. Now it's a brand new wolrd of cheap and accurate tuners.

I've been through about 3 sharks and the D-addaario compact. The Sharks break and eat batteries. I find the Daddario to be futzy to tune. Neither are sunlight readable AT ALL and two of the main places I play are on the porch and on my boat so I needed an alternative.

I've always trust Peterson and they claimed sunlight readability so I splashed out for the Strobo-clip.

I'm abolutely having a why didn't I just do this from the beginning moment. It's sunlight readable, not sort of but simply is. Batteries seem to be lasting and maybe because I have more experience with petersons than I do needle or pretend needle tuners, I find it very easy to come right up to the tuning without overshooting and having to start over. It takes a little practice but there's a lot of information in watching the partials as well as the top fundamental ring.

A lot of people call this complicated. It does a lot. It tunes just about everything and has several modes but keep this in mind: You push a button that looks like every other power button on the planet and you make a noise at it and it works exactly the way 90 percent of us use our tuners 90 percent of the time. You have to choose to explore the other modes and options or NEED to because you want to find the mandolin or violin setting but if you know that the first string on the cello is A or on the mando an E, you don't strictly have to find any settings tune to either an E on A as the case may be and get on with it. When you want or need a different setting you'll look it up and after you've done it a few times you'll remember the button pushes to get there. Another thing you get from Peterson, is real support from the people who make them and sell them.

Professional multi-instrumentalist musician and teacher here with 30+ years experience. Having worked in a small handful of guitar shops and taught innumerable lessons, I’ve tried them all. This is the best. No other tuner offers this level of precision. It may take a minute or two to learn to use it properly but once you do you’ll discover the experience of being more perfectly in tune than you’ve ever been before. Its flexibility with different “sweetened” tunings for dozens of instruments and tuning schemes is unique in the industry and absolutely great. Got an old Martin with intonation issues? This can ameliorate that. Play the banjo or dobro and can’t get that B string to really sing? Get this. Can’t afford it? Well, perhaps. If being perfectly in tune isn’t crucially important to you, get a Snark or something. This is a professional level tool that any professional wouldn’t want to live without once they try it.

Easy to read, highly accurate and offers sweetened tunings.

Price is a bit heavy but this is an easy to read tuner that also allows a whole variety of tunings. With the usual headstock tuners, it can be difficult to see when the indicator is centred and because I'm red/green colour blind it's not easy to see red off-tune indications.

The Peterson tuner uses a rotating display which stops moving when the instrument is in tune; very easy to use. I leave mine set to sweetened tunings, which tunes the strings a few cents short on the actual note and gives a more pleasant sound. That's a subject which others can google.

Probably the best accessory I've bought for my guitars, over many years.
