The pedal is a spring-loaded safety switch. Just press and hold to turn on, lift your foot from the pedal to turn off the tool. (Not variable speed).     A while back I purchased a Stripmeister wire stripper so I can recycle all the old wire I remove from construction projects. The stripper has paid for itself many times over, but I always wanted to make the task even easier. Before, everytime you wanted to use the machine, you would either have to turn it on and adjust the speed or just leave it running while you got more wire ready. I picked up this foot switch to see if this would change anything, Oh man, what a difference. Now I turn on the machine, adjust the the speed and take my foot off the switch when I need more wire. Then when I am ready, step on the foot switch and start feeding wire, I have easily shaved 25% of the work time off this process so I am making even more money. And the best part is, the motor isn't running continuously, and the on/off switch should last a lot longer. I now use this foot switch on my "wet" tile saw, my small table saw (not recommend for safety reasons) and other e-powered tools that I use regularly in my shop. I will be ordering a few more so I don't have to keep moving just one around all over my shop. This switch works great, is easy to set up, and will help you keep your eyes on your work. This switch is NOT recommended for large power tools pulling more than 10 amps or over 1/2hp.

    this is second time purchasing this product. it works great, just like described. i use it for the shop vac at salon to sweep hair up to and not having to use dust pan. very convenient. only slight issue with the durability of product. had not been a full year and it already had to be replaced. was it due to the amount of use? not sure. good thing was inexpensive and since have prime, no delivery fee. cords came detached inside foot unit. could be an easy fix and would have back up just in case.

    First of all, all the bad reviews are not justified. Just because you don't take the time to understand how a product works before you buy it, is NOT the fault of the product OR the seller,

    This is a normally OFF, momentary ON switch, meaning that when you hold your foot on the switch it remains on, and when you remove your foot it is off. It is NOT a toggle switch. I bought this switch for a vibration table that I'll use for vibrating concrete casting forms. The vibration table is just a piece of 3/4" plywood bolted to a used car tire, with the vibrator bolted to the center from underneath. The specs say this foot switch is rated at 1/2 hp, which is when using it to control loads that use a motor. You can use it for most hand tools, but don't expect to be able to use it for fixed equipment like table saws, floor model drill presses, or anything else that uses a motor in the 1HP range.

    At the suggestion of a friend, I recently picked up this switch to use with my table saw. It works perfectly well. You step on the petal to power the saw and remove your foot to let the saw wind down.

    This proved very fortunate recently as I was cutting some small, thin pieces of wood. I took my foot off the saw and took a step to my right, at which point the table saw kicked one of the cut pieces back into my stomach.

    I ended up with a bruise and a Lesson, but I had stepped off the switch and the saw was running at no more than 1/3 of its full power when it tossed the wood back my way. This switch was the difference between a bruise and a trip to the hospital.

    In general I am very careful with the table saw but accidents can happen and the ability to cut power to the saw buy stepping off this switch is invaluable.
