About the authors
Follow authors to get new release updates, plus improved recommendations.Joshua Palmatier is a writer with a PhD in mathematics. He was born in Pennsylvania, but has lived in numerous states over his life and currently resides in New York while teaching mathematics full-time at a university. "The Skewed Throne," his first work of fantasy, was a Compton Crook finalist for best first novel in the science fiction and fantasy genres for 2006. "The Cracked Throne" and "The Vacant Throne" complete the series, all published by DAW Books. He is currently at work on two epic fantasy trilogies--the first comprising the books "Well of Sorrows" and "Leaves of Flame" (published in ebook format by Baen), and "Breath of Heaven" (forthcoming) as the third novel; and "Shattering the Ley" (published by DAW) as the start of the second trilogy, with "Threading the Needle" (forthcoming) as the follow-up.
As an editor, Joshua has worked with co-editor Patricia Bray on the anthologies "After Hours: Tales from the Ur-bar," "The Modern Fae's Guide to Surviving Humanity," and "Clockwork Universe: Steampunk vs Aliens." They are currently working on another anthology titled "Temporally Out of Order."
Also look for short stories by Joshua in the anthologies "Close Encounters of the Urban Kind," "Beauty Has Her Way" (both edited by Jennifer Brozek), and "River" (edited by Alma Alexander). An upcoming story will appear in "Apollo's Daughters."
Joshua Palmatier is also the founder of a small press called Zombies Need Brains, which published sci-fi and fantasy themed anthologies. Find out more at www.zombiesneedbrains.com.
Alan Smale writes alternate history, historical fantasy, and hard SF. His novella of a Roman invasion of ancient America, “A Clash of Eagles”, won the Sidewise Award for Alternate History, and his novels set in the same universe, Clash of Eagles, Eagle in Exile, and Eagle and Empire (2015-2017) are available from Del Rey in the US and Titan Books in the UK and Europe. His “Roman baseball” collaboration with Rick Wilber, The Wandering Warriors, came out from WordFire Press in 2020, and Hot Moon, his alternate-Apollo “technothriller with heart”, set entirely on and around the Moon, was launched by CAEZIK SF & Fantasy in 2022, with sequel Radiant Sky following in 2024 and the grand finale, Burning Night, in November 2025. Alan has sold over 50 stories to Asimov’s, Sunday Morning Transport, and other magazines and anthologies, and his short story “Gunpowder Treason” earned him a second Sidewise Award in 2022. His non-fiction essays have appeared in Lightspeed, Journey Planet, and Galaxy’s Edge. Alan grew up in Yorkshire, England, and earned degrees in Physics and Astrophysics from Oxford University. Until recently he performed astronomical research into Galactic neutron star and black hole binary systems at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, and served as the Director of one of NASA’s big-three astrophysical data archives.
