Too short
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 April 2014I have 2 of these books (bought one as a gift). This one does not contain 'The Man Who Sold The Moon' or 'All you Zombies', although the cover and title are the same, and the sad part is - those are his best stories!

Heinlein - was he the Master SF writer
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 June 2001For anyone who has never read Heinlein this book would not be a waste of money as they would be enthralled by the variety of stories and the wonderful prose. Heinlein is one of the masters of the SF genre and may well have been the best. For nearly 40 years he produced a wide variety of stories winning 4 Hugo Awards. Modern readers will be aware of his Stranger in a Strange Land which was cruelly transferred to the big screen and certainly did not do justice to the book. Heinlein himself, refused to allow film rights on his books during his life (died in 1988) mainly because film techniques could not do justice to the imaginations in his books. Glory Road ranks alongside Tolkien's Hobbit in story and ideas. The Puppet Masters exhibits alien body invasion with ideas that are frequently found in more recent books and films.
I suggest that, although an iniatlly high price, this volume will enthrall all who buy and and who enjoy SF. The other stories within further exhibit the magnitude of Heinlein's imagination.

Perceptive Reader5 out of 5 starsVerified PurchaseCompulsory Read!
Reviewed in India on 3 May 2018Three short stories and a novella, that's all that this book has. But the impact it has on the mind of the reader is quite incredible. It's even more hard to accept since these stories had been written at a time when, in the words of Peter R. Weston, science fiction was considered pretty disreputable!
The first story selected for this slim volume is 'Lifeline'. Written in 1939 it was the author's first published story. But WHAT a wry, dark story this one is! Without delving on so-called science, it's a careful study of expectations of humanity, regarding life, and death. As a short story, it's superb, and remains powerful.
'The Roads Must Roll' is part of Heinlein's 'Future History' series. The science part is pretty hard. But the life-force of this story is study of human characters in the middle of crisis. Despite being published in 1940 you may read it even now as a story without all the trappings of so-called sci-fi, to enjoy the grit.
'And He Built a Crooked House', published in 1940, is a very funny story. Heinlein should have given us more of such gems.
'The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag', published in 1942, is one of the most dark, silently visceral, and claustrophobic novellas that I have read. If you are yet to read this one, I strongly urge you to rectify the situation.
Overall, this slim volume was a genuine trait. I wholeheartedly recommend it to all readers who appreciate solid stories with believable characters and sharp observations.
