Freya North reunites her popular McCabe girls – sisters Cat, Fen and Pip – in her warm and sexy new novel.
Despite their mother having run off with a cowboy from Denver when they were small, and having been brought up in a draughty house in Derbyshire by their eccentric uncle Django, the McCabe girls actually consider themselves very normal and well-adjusted.
Pip is stepmother to 10-year-old Tom, Fen has a young baby and Cat has returned to England to start a family. Their mid 30s are promising to be a time of comfort and contentment. However, at their uncle’s 70th birthday party, an unexpected guest arrives. Old family secrets are unearthed.
Soon new bombshells are dropped. Each sister must confront her own identity crisis and handle the threat this places on relationships.
Freya North has written a truthful, funny, sexy tale of mothers, daughters, lovers and liars.

Mothers, daughters, lovers, liars…
From the Back Cover
Mothers, daughters, lovers, liars…
Brought up by their eccentric uncle Django, the McCabe sisters had assumed their mid-thirties would be a time of happiness and stability.
The youngest, Cat, returns home from four years abroad, to start a new phase of her life. Easy - or so she thinks.
Fen, the middle sister, is determined to be a better mother to her baby daughter than her own was to her - but might this be at the expense of her love-life?
And is the eldest, Pip, too busy taking care of her stepson, her husband, her sisters, her uncle - to notice her own needs?
At Django's 75th birthday party, secrets are revealed that will change how the three sisters view their family forever. Heart and home, previously intertwined, are shattered and identities called into question.
What do you do when you find out that your sisters aren't quite your sisters?
About the Author
Freya North gave up a Ph.D. to write her first novel, Sally. For four years she turned deaf ears to parents and friends who pleaded with her to "get a proper job". She went on the dole and did a succession of freelance and temping jobs. Five publishers entered a bidding war for the book, and her first novel, Sally, was published to great acclaim. Her subsequent books, Chloe, Polly, Cat, Fen, Pip , Love Rules, Home Truths and Pillow Talk have all proved bestsellers.
About the author
Follow authors to get new release updates, plus improved recommendations.I'm the British author of 16 bestselling novels and have been published for almost 30 years! Alongside my traditionally published novels such as THE UNFINISHED BUSINESS OF EADIE BROWNE and LITTLE WING, I am also independently publishing too! These are exciting times for authors as never has there been such a fertile time to reach the reader...and my readers are so fundamentally important to me.
I'm thrilled to bring you the first of a series of novella's set in Flora's House - a wee white cottage on a wild, beautiful and remote part of the UK: the Outer Hebrides of Scotland.
CHRISTMAS AT FLORA'S HOUSE is the first in the series - an emotional, heartfelt story set over the festive period featuring a long-married couple and their first ever Christmas away from home. I had a little cry as I wrote it...and I hope so much you'll enjoy it!
The Unfinished Business of Eadie Browne is very much my own intensely personal love letter to youth, to friendship and to coming-of-age in the late 80s/ 1990s... Much of it was drawn from my own memories of leaving home for Manchester Uni and how that FELT.
My 15th novel Little Wing was written during the first lockdown. Set partly in the Outer Hebrides and interweaving the secrets and lies of two families over two time frames - it was a joy to research and write and certainly kept me sane during the Pandemic. In Spring this year (2025) I wrote its 'companion piece' STILL TIME - it's not a 'sequel' per se as I conceived and wrote the two books to be read in any order. I don't have a pub.date yet - but I can't wait to tell you more!
I've always been focussed on a sense of place being a key feature of my writing - settings being a leading character, not merely a backdrop. Previous locations have included North Norfolk, British Columbia, Derbyshire, Vermont, France, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall... I'm an avid reader too - and the novels of Barbara Trapido, Jane Gardam, Rose Tremain and Mary Wesley inspired me to write. I hope you enjoy my books - please keep in touch via my website, Facebook, Twitter and Insta! Happy Reading! Classic Freya !
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 April 2006Format: PaperbackThe three sisters Cat, Fen and Pip from Freya's previous novels all feature in this book. Fen the Art Historian and Matt now have a 6 month old baby girl but no sex life; Pip is still a clown, still with Zac but getting broody; Cat the Sports Reporter is back in England married to Ben the Sports Doctor and they're trying for a baby as well. All three get a nasty shock when their mother-who-ran-off-with-a-cowboy-from-Denver turns up at Uncle Djanbo's 75th birthday party! I won't spoil the rest of it, but it's a classic - a must-have for all Freya North fans.

home truths review
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 July 2011I bought this book before and misplaced it so I purchased again. I love Freya North and everything she writes so if your a fan this is a must. It follows the life of the McCabe family after the books, Pip, Fen and Cat. This book is slightly more emotional than the others so brace yourself for a few tears. I would definitly recommend if you are into romcom type novels!!!This story isn't as gripping as some of Freya Norths other stories, but I don't mean this in a bad way, it for me is more or a slow summer read!!enjoy!
