Between the 1460s and the 1630s Ireland was transformed from a medieval into a modern society. A poor society on the periphery of Europe, dominated by the conflicts of competing warlords-Irish and English-it later became a centralised political unit with a single government and code of laws, and a still primitive, but rapidly developing, market economy. These changes, however, had been achieved by brutal wars of conquest, while large scale colonisation projects had created lasting tensions between old inhabitants and recent settlers. At the same time the great religious divide of the Reformation had introduced a further source of conflict to Ireland, dividing the population into two hostile camps, while at the same time giving it a new and dangerous role in the conflict between England and its continental enemies. Against this confused and constantly changing background, individuals and groups had repeatedly to adapt their customs and behaviour, their political allegiances and aspirations, and their sense of who they were. A long and complex story, with many false starts and numerous dead ends, it is the story of the people who became the modern Irish.

A very competent introduction to a very complex and controversial subject.

I chose this as my introduction to early modern Ireland after some careful research and - overall - i was not disappointed. Although the author is clearly more comfortable writing about a later period (ie volume 2 of this set: Divided Kingdom) I feel that i have been introduced skilfully to the thorny issues of the attempt to impose Reformation on Ireland, the Elizabethan re-conquest and the origins of the disasterous Ulster plantations that would lead to the later Troubles, as well as gaining a flavour of the complexity of an Irish society divided by different groups of settlers and riven by ethnic, political and religious faultlines.

I particularly appreciated the way in which the author introduced a range of different interpretations of these highly controversial events, stating clearly his favoured interpretation but always indicating in the footnotes where one could find more detail and differing views.

My only criticism is the lack of tools for students new to the period. A chronology of basic events, a list of lord deputies, a guide to the fortunes of the leading clans and a guide to further reading would have made this frankly confusing tale a lot easier to follow!

In great condition, this chunky paperback was sent quickly. A dense, fascinating read. Authoritative, detailed, and written with style. As good as Gillespie's great book on 17C Ireland. Nice maps too!
