Kim Kinnison, Number One man of his time, had faced challenges before - but rarely one as daunting as this. To him fell the perilous task of infiltrating the inner circle of Boskone, stronghold of galactic civilization's most deadly foe. Kinnison had to become a loyal Boskonian in every gesture, deed and thought. He had to work his way up through the ranks of an alien enemy organization, right into the highest echelons of power. Then it would be he who issued the orders - orders that would destroy his own civilization . . .
Second Stage Lensmen is the fifth self-contained novel in E. E. 'Doc' Smith's epic Lensman series, one of the all-time classics of adventurous, galaxy-spanning science fiction.

A Saga to the stars
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 October 2015A Saga to the stars is my heading for this masterpiece I purchased this and a couple of other titles within the saga as I have read the others to death. This saga is now counted as one of the classic's of the Sci-Fi world and simply it is. This tale stand on its own as a book but works far better if you get the whole saga they are getting harder to find now so this time I will take better care of them. If you do buy into this saga expect a few late nights as you read just one more chapter they are addictive.

Red Lensman
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 October 2021This fourth book sees Clarissa McDougall inducted as a lens wearer. She has trouble coming to grips with wearing a lens as she does not believe she is worthy. Kinnison is still not thinking clearly and misses an important clue when he faces Fossten in Boskone's command warship.
Mentor says that the marriage between Clarissa and Kinnison is necessary when they ask his permission to marry.

Old sci-fi but not at its best
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 November 2015It is the 5th book in the series but can happily be read with out having read the preceding 4. It is old Sci-Fi started in an almost pre atomic age and concluded I think before manned space flight so the vision of the future is perhaps in some respects supplanted by what we now know not even 100 years later. The view that smoking is totally harmless whilst pretty much all other substance abuse isn't but only wrecks the body for one example.
Still a good read and not many transcription errors as some of the earlier books in the series and it is all there.

Reviewed in Australia on 7 June 2015Romance, ginormous weaponry, subterfuge, evil drawn out, surprising races, timidity a virtue in the right context - the drama rolls on with a gusto.

Jean Guarr5 out of 5 starsVerified PurchaseA sprawling novel with appealing heros, heroines, and aliens. Space opera at its best! Accept it for what it is and enjoy!
Reviewed in the United States on 3 May 2015Dated but fascinating. Big novel with sweeping concepts and lots of action. The Lensmen are gearing up for the final, galaxy-shaking battle which takes place in Children of the Lens, but in some ways I like this book better. There is optimism without the touch of sadness that occurs at the end of the last book, and each of the main characters gets to strut his stuff. Romance, action, telepaths and weird creatures! Handsome males and well-stacked women! Drugs and crime galore. A glimpse of the evil hand that moves fate toward the last crisis. Space battles and the lovely FTL drive created by eliminating inertia. What's not to like? If you like the series, be sure to read Masters of the Vortex, which occurs during the great struggle and opens up new vistas which Doc did not have time to explore. I like the man's zest! Flawed but magnificent! Note: many typos, a few quite hilarious. I've read the books in print format before, so I just dived in and raw-read through the bumps. Try it!

Reviewed in Canada on 6 June 2017I read this book when I was 11 years old. I came to realized how important the series was in affecting my thought patters so I re-read them at 67. The ideas in these books affected many of the modern space movie producers and my thought on Life, thought and the Universe

Aphidman3 out of 5 starsVerified PurchaseA Good Space Opera Marred by Many Typos
Reviewed in Canada on 15 January 2017If you liked the other Lensman books, you will like this one. Unfortunately, the text appears to have been poorly OCRed and is full of typos. Often words that clearly should contain the letters "th" have "di" instead. There are peculiar paragraph breaks that were probably page breaks in the paper version. If this had been a $2.00 book, I would not complain, but the quality is poor for the price.

Foo Bar4 out of 5 starsVerified PurchaseGlorious but marred by OCR typos
Reviewed in the United States on 13 December 2023The lensman series invented the genre of space opera. This reader finds it glorious! Be warned that it was written at a time when gender concepts were very narrow - these books are actually fairly enlightened for their time. Shame on the publisher, though, for not bothering to use spellcheck or other easy tools to clean up he many OCR typos. E.E. Smith's brilliant command of English deserves better!
