This title includes ten classic stories from the birth of modern science fiction writing. The Golden Age of Science Fiction, from the early 1940s through the 1950s, saw an explosion of talent in SF writing including authors such as Isaac Asimov, Robert A. Heinlein, and Arthur C. Clarke. Their writing helped science fiction gained wide public attention, and left a lasting impression upon society. The same writers formed the mould for the next three decades of science fiction, and much of their writing remains as fresh today as it was then. Collected in one giant volume, here is the very best of the golden era. The stories include: A.E. van Vogt's "The Weapons Shop"; Isaac Asimov's "The Big and the Little"; Lester del Rey's "Nerves"; Fredric Brown's "Daymare"; Theodore Sturgeon's "Killdozer!"; C.L. Moore's "No Woman Born"; and, A. Bertram Chandler's "Giant Killer".

Isaac Asimov (/ˈaɪzᵻk ˈæzᵻmɒv/; born Isaak Yudovich Ozimov; circa January 2, 1920 – April 6, 1992) was an American author and professor of biochemistry at Boston University, best known for his works of science fiction and for his popular science books. Asimov was prolific and wrote or edited more than 500 books and an estimated 90,000 letters and postcards. His books have been published in 9 of the 10 major categories of the Dewey Decimal Classification.

Asimov wrote hard science fiction and, along with Robert A. Heinlein and Arthur C. Clarke, he was considered one of the "Big Three" science fiction writers during his lifetime. Asimov's most famous work is the Foundation Series; his other major series are the Galactic Empire series and the Robot series. The Galactic Empire novels are explicitly set in earlier history of the same fictional universe as the Foundation series. Later, beginning with Foundation's Edge, he linked this distant future to the Robot and Spacer stories, creating a unified "future history" for his stories much like those pioneered by Robert A. Heinlein and previously produced by Cordwainer Smith and Poul Anderson. He wrote hundreds of short stories, including the social science fiction "Nightfall", which in 1964 was voted by the Science Fiction Writers of America the best short science fiction story of all time. Asimov wrote the Lucky Starr series of juvenile science-fiction novels using the pen name Paul French.

Asimov also wrote mysteries and fantasy, as well as much nonfiction. Most of his popular science books explain scientific concepts in a historical way, going as far back as possible to a time when the science in question was at its simplest stage. He often provides nationalities, birth dates, and death dates for the scientists he mentions, as well as etymologies and pronunciation guides for technical terms. Examples include Guide to Science, the three-volume set Understanding Physics, and Asimov's Chronology of Science and Discovery, as well as works on astronomy, mathematics, history, William Shakespeare's writing, and chemistry.

Asimov was a long-time member and vice president of Mensa International, albeit reluctantly; he described some members of that organization as "brain-proud and aggressive about their IQs". He took more joy in being president of the American Humanist Association. The asteroid 5020 Asimov, a crater on the planet Mars, a Brooklyn elementary school, and a literary award are named in his honor.

I am a reader. I will read just about anything - but I do love my Sci-fi and Sci-fantasy etc. Having been reading sci fi for years (I had read most of Edgar rice burroughs by the time I was 11) I still rate Asimov as the father of the robot stories. But anything at all that he has written - I have enjoyed.

Since then I have read so many different authors, but my love of sci-fi started really with Asimov. He wrote so many shorts, and is included in so many compilations. So I cannot resist his work.

    Love it

Not surprisingly, a collection of ten short sci-fi stories written by different authors some 80 years ago is bound to be something of a mixed bag. Some are well-written but seem very dated, having been overtaken by subsequent scientific and technological advances. I particularly enjoyed 'The Weapons Shop' by A E van Vogt and 'With Folded Hands' by Jack Williamson, but some of the other stories, such as 'Giant Killer', were poor.

Asimov edits, some of the stories are quite good, This volume does not contain fantasy rubbish that is now prevalent in science fiction today.

The stories stretch reality slightly , thus making up the main feature of each tale, One story by Asimov, from the Foundation series.

Another five star rating, if it were 6 or more stars I would have still given maximum rating.

A collection of great novellas from the Golden years. Easy read, of very interesting and "lost" sci fi from great writers of that era.

I had trouble laying this compilation down, even when I finished one story. Recommended for anyone who is an aficionado of sci fi.

Please note for science critics. These stories were written at a time when the science of the stories was new to everyone, and some of the science was extrapolated (fictional?) at that time, some which is real now.

Just good old-fashioned science-fiction. Some of the "science" seems quaint and very optimistic now. Most of the stories feel like they were written in the 40s. The last one, With Folded Hands, could actually be a story written today. While it has the pace and feel of a 40s story, the subject matter is quite fitting with the currant spate of stories dealing with runaway super intelligence.

If you feel nostalgic for the good old days of sci-fi, this book will help fill that void.

    "Golden Age" truly golden

The Mammoth Book of Golden Age science fiction should be required reading for anyone interested in science fiction today. Isaac Asimov, one of the creators of the Golden Age himself, has selected works that invoked in readers of the time a sense of wonder that is largely gone from modern day sf, particularly in those works now being created in book series that endlessly rehash the same plot lines, and those efforts to develop, by new authors, sequels to classic tales whose original authors have died. Each of the Golden Age authors in this book bring unique ideas and style to the genre, which had just broken away from its original pulp magazine foundation, ideas and style which generated a sence of wonder from those of us who first discovered these works as children. I am not certain that newer writers -- working as they do in a more sophisticated and better educated age -- will ever be able to duplicate that feeling in today's youth.
