Description
As she burns at the stake, 17th century witch Jennifer (Veronica Lake), places a curse on her accuser, Jonathan Wooley (Fredric March - in multiple generational roles), hexing all the future men in his family with bad luck in love. When she returns three centuries later, via a lightning bolt hitting the tree she was killed on, Jennifer wishes to make the latest in the Wooley clan, Wallace, fall in love with her and torment him thus. The only problem is that she accidentally drinks the love potion intended for Jonathan and swiftly proceeds to fall in love with him! The course of true love never did run smoothly, and even less so as Jennifer's, similarly executed, father returns and Estelle, Jonathan's socialite fiancée, gets involved!

A classic.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 September 2018There was something quite charming about this film. It's very old, and the quality isn't great. The special effects are awful viewed through modern eyes, but nevertheless, it's worth a watch. The storyline is good and Veronica Lake is wonderful in the role of the young witch, Jennifer, burned at the stake and seeking her revenge on the descendants of the man responsible for her death when her spirit is released from captivity. I wasn't entirely charmed by Fredric March, the man who played her love interest, though. I think his lack of screen presence spoilt the film for me. It would have been more enjoyable with a different male lead. All the same, I loved the film, and it's definitely a classic.

Brilliant Film - Poor Quality!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 October 2011Ignoring other reviewer's comments, I actually bought the film myself and whilst it was watchable, I wished really that I had taken a little more notice with reference to the poor quality of the film. However, the film itself is excellent and with the film having a somewhat 'dusty' and 'crackly' appearance, seems to a add a little. I recommend you watch this on a Sunday afternoon with a good glass of red!

The Best : I married a witch - to date
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 September 2015This movie (René Clair, 1942) is a little chef-d'oeuvre, with an excellent script, cast....and the little Veronica Lake at her best : 1942 = 20 years old, very pretty blonde...and here is the BLU-RAY : you can see (even / black and white !) the beautiful hair of Veronica, even guess for her (blue) eyes. Very fine acting, with René Clair as Director : Jennifer behind the armchair, smiling and asking : " Am I not an attractive female" ?) ...and so on, with humour. Now, the Blu-ray. Very nice pictures : O.K. No bonus or only a (bad) trailer. Audio : Spanish...but with also an excellent English Sound, (4 KO)...and Jennifer's voice is now a delight. No French option, not even French subtitle. So, for a Frenchman, going first to English/subtitle English (for Spanish would be only a disturbing thing here) is the first solution. Or, let us buy also the French DVD, a good one indeed (with suppléments : filmographies / René Clair ; Veronica Lake ; Fredric March) giving VF, VO : English with French subtitle)...and thereafter, let us go back to the spanish Blu-ray...with English/English ! What a way. But, so you can understand all the subtleties of witchcraft ! And enjoy the nice face, hair and voice of Jennifer, in love, and fighting for her love against her father. Not a Sorcière (the ugly old one), but a Magicienne (all witchcraft), indeed une Fée (young, beautiful, and good-hearted). And, at last : English sound only. Jennifer calling Wally is a must ! Enjoy it ! So, why only four stars ? No French subtitles ; bonus like nothing ...
The movie, no doubt, is a Five Stars one,

NOTE!!!CRITERION COLLECTION DVD
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 January 2014Oh Amazon!! All these negative quality reviews for old VHS/DVD's which have nothing to do with this 2013 release from CRITERION. These are the first reviews that you come upon and for a careless reader may well put people off this really good release. So... Criterion have again done a good job. Beautiful B/W 4.3 Print, clear picture and sound. An interesting booklet with tales of March. Lake, Benchley and loads more and an interview with Rene Clair, and a trailer. The film itself is perhaps not to everyone's liking or taste. It is romantic whimsy, but whimsy at it's best, with great acting from everyone, including, perhaps surprisingly, a very funny one from Susan Hayward. But it is Lake's film - Beautiful, vulnerable and a bit wicked as she sets out to seduce and ruin March whose ancestor 250 years ago put her and her father to death as witches. However, as the saying goes "Complications ensue". At 74 mins long there is nary a dull moment, and it gets a rare 5 stars, but, I have to say, it's a personal 5 stars, because as I have said, it may not be eveyone's cup of proverbial.

Reviewed in the United States on 27 June 2026This is a wonderful film from the criterion collection, and was the basis for the Bewitched TV series. Definitely a fun vintage watch, and since criterion does such a good job at film restoration, it looks great on our big screen TV! I was very happy to pick this up during a sale.

babel5 out of 5 starsVerified PurchaseI Married a Witch - Criterion (2013)
Reviewed in Canada on 7 January 2018I hadn't seen this movie in eons and was delighted to find it in a restored version by Criterion. A nicely done digital transfer with remastered soundtrack of this fun classic starring Veronica Lake and Fredric March. Bonuses in this version include a 20-minute audio interview on the dvd with director Rene Clair, discussing the changing art of film, plus an interesting, and very readable, essay by Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin in the accompanying booklet.
P.S. Not given in the product details, but there are English SDH.
