Book overview
Sleep Misfits is the first book to extensively explore delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS) and non-24-hour-sleep-wake disorder (Non-24) through the words of actual experients.
Although circadian sleep disorders have seen an increase in published research and media coverage, they are still little-known and little-understood. There remains massive prejudice and discrimination against those of us whose body clocks prevent us from waking and sleeping at socially-approved hours. The main purpose of this book is to tackle these wide-scale negative assumptions by increasing empathy.
Additionally, the book is intended to serve as a manual for people affected, including their families. A detailed section on childhood is included for the many parents confused and exasperated by their children’s wayward sleep hours.
Text book style descriptions are supplemented with research links, and sit alongside comments volunteered by real-life DSPS and Non-24 people, and a wealth of illustrations.
"This book gave me the confidence and motivation to seek further official recognition for my Non-24. The rich, frank and detailed information compiled by Sally Cat, from countless anecdotal and scientific sources, makes for a truly cathartic read and helped me to find the words to describe how I've felt for 12 years, since my diagnosis as a child." Jordan Hendy.

Sally Cat is an adult PDA author, illustrator, animator and public speaker. As a visual thinker and trained person-centred counsellor, she communicates the inner experience of the PDA neurotype via creative, graphic memes. Her Facebook page, Sally Cat's PDA page, has over 12,000 followers, including fellow adult PDAers, parents and professionals. Feedback across the board (from professionals to adults querying their neurology) has been that her memes have communicated what dense written documents cannot.
'Pathological Demand Avoidance Explained' is a collection of 75 of these memes adapted for e-book and paperback format.
'PDA by PDAers', published by JKP in 2018, is the first book about adult PDA. Illustrated throughout, the transcript takes the form of discussion carried out by over 70 adult PDAers. Sally chose this round table format to reflect the unconventional, non-hierarchical nature of the PDA neurotype.

SALLY CAT PUTS IT ALL TOGETHER
Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2022Format: PaperbackDelayed Sleep Phase Syndrome has been a problem ignored, belittled, or worse by family, employers, and even physicians, despite its large cost to the lives of the people it afflicts. Now, with Sally Cat’s outstanding book Sleep Misfits, we have page after page of anecdotes, explanations, and discussions that those of us with the syndrome can point to and say “See? That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you for years.”

Very well thought out and put together!
Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2022Format: KindleSleep Misfits is an amazing resource for those with DSPS and Non 24 and especially for their families members who do not have it. I am recommending this book to multiple friends and family who are reasonably concerned about something they don't understand or have the time a mother does to research like crazy!! Sally Cat put many real life experiences of those living with these conditions and the scientific information to go with it. We are only 3 years in our Non 24 journey with our son and am so thankful for the community we have found.

Michael Reed5 out of 5 starsVerified PurchaseA wonderful and extremely useful book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 23, 2022Format: PaperbackThis is an excellent book for anyone who wants to find out more about circadian rhythm disorders (CRDs) such as Non 24 Hour Sleep/Wake Disorder and Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome. It contains a lot of material quoted from online forums, but I think the author has sold herself a bit short with the ‘compiled by’ attribution as she has contributed a lot of her own analysis and commentary as well.
I suffer from N24 disorder myself, and it’s a wonderful validation to be able to read accounts from other people with a circadian rhythm disorder. Online mediums such as Facebook tend to be somewhat ephemeral, so it’s extremely useful to have all of this information compiled into a single source like this.
It’s a highly useful book for CRD sufferers and other people who would like to know more about CRDs. Because of the use of quoted material, it’s particularly effective at giving an insight into the lived experiences of CRD sufferers like myself.
It’s also excellent value for money at over 400 pages! I’m happy to give the book a five star rating. In my opinion, it’s a treasure trove of useful information and first hand accounts, making it essential reading for all CRD sufferers.
