Let’s talk about something rarely mentioned in glossy HR reports: how certain industries and departments — especially in hospitality and service sectors across the GCC — have quietly become echo chambers for a single cultural group. Not by policy, not by talent shortage… but by design. And it’s not just a coincidence. It’s a strategy: referrals within the same network, promotions staying within a comfortable circle, interviews that were over before they began — because the decision was made before the resume was even printed. Ironically, this is often disguised as “professionalism” or “experience.” But if we unwrap that label, we sometimes find an unspoken gatekeeping system that punishes competence that doesn’t come wrapped in a familiar accent, or face, or background. This isn’t about individuals — it’s about systems. And systems don’t need bad people to produce bad outcomes. They just need everyone to keep saying, “That’s just how things are.” What’s the result? Being approached after such a long period naturally signals that your profile has been carefully reviewed and that there is genuine interest. I appreciated the outreach and made time for a discussion with the HR Manager. A few days later, I was informed that I was not shortlisted. While I respect every company’s right to choose the candidate they believe is the best fit, professionalism in recruitment goes beyond the final decision. Reaching out to a candidate after three years should come with: • Clear alignment between the role and the candidate’s profile • Internal clarity before initiating discussions • Respect for the candidate’s time and expectations • Transparent communication about where they truly stand in the process When outreach happens without strong alignment, it can feel reactive rather than intentional. Candidate experience is a direct reflection of organizational culture. The way companies handle communication — especially after reinitiating contact — speaks volumes about structure and leadership. Then it happened — one small FIFO miss during prep created a ripple effect: stock rotated incorrectly, and an overheld product almost made it to the pass. I spotted it just in time. Now I could’ve just corrected the team member and kept moving — but instead, I took 90 seconds to explain why FIFO matters.
