Expert advice from the consultants and colleagues was invaluable, as were websites from organizations such as the
NEDCC <http://www.nedcc.org/disaster/disaster.php> and NN/LM <http://nnlm.gov/ep/>.
Wilson and
NEDCC have taken on what seemed to be an insurmountable challenge to change tradition and status quo.
Among the items that NEDCC conserved was the diary of Agnes Von Kurowsky, Hemingway's Red Cross nurse at the hospital in Milan where he convalesced after his WWI injuries.
Four of the books, including Los Proverbios by Francisco Goya, Portrait of Mabel Dodge by Gertrude Stein, and Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea and the The Torrents of Spring, received conservation treatment at NEDCC.
Rare books, such as the Hemingway family bible, a first edition of The Old Man and the Sea with Hemingway's marginalia, Agnes von Kurowsky's World War I diary, Goya's Los Proverbios, and a first, edition of Gertrude Stein's Portrait of Mabel Dodge, were sent to
NEDCC for conservation.
