BAE Systems Information and Electronic Warfare Systems' (Nashua, NH) micro-internetted unattended ground sensors (MIUGS), for example, a project funded by the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency that was tested during the US Navy's Millennium Challenge '02 exercise last year, can fuse acoustic and seismic to detect the actual location of a target.

MIUGS sensors, for example, which are designed to search not only for objects on the ground but in the air as well, have a detection range of up to 3 km, Scalera said.

Unattended ground sensor systems like MIUGS and those under development for the US Air Force's Advanced Remote Ground Unattended Sensors program can similarly guide UAVs to refine their area of surveillance, giving them an electronic heads-up about where to take a closer look.
