Little in Martel's first films--La otra (The Other, 1989), a short experimental documentary about drag queens, and Rey muerto (Dead King, 1995), a brief, blunt feminist western--prepared viewers for the reach and complexity of her debut feature, La cienaga, which flirts with the director's other favorite genre, the horror film.

Martel's presenting skills were tested to the max when she had to demonstrate an unusual feature in the property's bathroom - a hole in the door.

With funding support from NIBIB and others, Martel's research team conducted a series of experiments to show that the bacteria's unique navigation system could be exploited to more efficiently deliver drugs to tumors.

Turning in the second half of this book to American history, Martel asserts that the nation's grand strategy fundamentally has been that of neither a "status-quo" state nor a "revolutionary" one; it consistently has been that of a "gradualist" state, always seeking change but never rapid and radical change.
