Maclaren, our hostess, thought nothing good enough for such a guest; and as Duncan Dhu (which was the name of our host) had a pair of pipes in his house, and was much of a lover of music, this time of my recovery was quite a festival, and we commonly turned night into day.

Duncan Dhu and the rest that knew that I had come there in Alan's company, could have entertained no doubt of who I was; and many others must have had their guess.

Duncan Dhu made haste to bring out the pair of pipes that was his principal possession, and to set before his guests a mutton-ham and a bottle of that drink which they call Athole brose, and which is made of old whiskey, strained honey and sweet cream, slowly beaten together in the right order and proportion.

Primary cooling is provided by a DHU of approximately 2600 Watt (9000 Btu/h) capacity with efficiency ratings of 20 SEER, 13.85 EER, and 10 HSPF (Samsung 2006).

The second goal was to assess the ability of the DHU to provide uniform room air temperatures throughout the house.

To determine the performance of the DHU at providing uniform air temperatures throughout the house, temperature measurements were taken in each of the three bedrooms, the bathroom, and the landing on the second floor, along with the living room, dining room, bedroom, bathroom, and thermostat location on the first floor.

[E.sub.DHU] is the measured site electricity consumption (kWh) of the DHU

10 is the rated heating seasonal performance factor (HSPF) (Btu output/Wh input) of the DHU

[Eff.sub.DHU] is the rated seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) (Btu output/Wh input) of the DHU

Per Figure 2, although the DHU is used primarily during summer cooling months while the ERV operates continuously year round, their respective total energy consumption values are actually closely equivalent.

Based on measured electricity consumption of the DHU, the annual cooling thermal energy intensity is calculated to be 33.3 kWh/[m.sup.2] (10,600 Btu/[ft.sup.2]), assuming that the DHU performed at its rated SEER.
