Recap: Same old tricks

I said earlier that I thought Bill Clinton's comparison of Barack Obama to Jesse Jackson--both winning South Carolina--was racist, and at the very least was designed to highlight race. I think I may have been wrong. (Only slightly helping my case is that just about every other blagger out there was also wrong--but it just goes to show, can't trust a blagger.)

The remark was taken out of context and was the response to a question. A reporter at a Columbia, SC polling place had asked Bill, "What does it say about Barack Obama that it takes two of you to beat him?" Up until Clinton's response, Jesse Jackson had not been mentioned.

Perhaps it was very carefully calculated and planned. I doubt it, though. Can't say why. Just a feeling.

This caucus blog [NYT] gives a little more information. (It's also my source for this entry. So maybe you can trust a blagger, but not far.)

The issue also demonstrates the media's role in escalation of squabbles--or in this case, non-squabbles--between candidates.

Oh, and see also Obama's response [Guardian].
