Description

About Timber Press

The very first book Timber Press published in 1980 is still in print. J. D. Vertree's Japanese Maples, rejected by a dozen other publishers, was by no means a sure bet at the time. It eventually created its own market by filling a need for horticultural information on those beautiful plants. Founder Richard Abel followed this successful lead with a line of quality books for sophisticated gardeners, horticulturists, botanists, naturalists, and landscape professionals.

Robert Conklin, who bought the company in 1989, comments that "the longevity of our books — an unusual phenomenon in the world of book publishing — reflects our basic publishing philosophy: that we publish books written by genuine experts, and lavish upon them the most thoughtful and meticulous editorial attention, to assure their authoritative quality and enduring value."

Today Timber Press, located in Portland, Oregon, has over four hundred titles in print and is considered the preeminent publisher of horticulture books. The public's love affair with gardening, making it the number one leisure activity in the U.S., means that the number of educated gardeners has blossomed. They want in-depth, expert information, and they thirst for the next new trend.
