Raven Publishing, Inc. - Home of the Starlight Series of horse stories for children and new Books coming
Description
History and goals: Raven Publishing, Inc. began with a newsletter in 1997 to help fill a need for a forum for adult survivors of child abuse, as well as a means of educating the public about the long lasting and devastating effects of childhood trauma. Dubbed Alone Together, it has been published bi-monthly ever since May, 1997, as a means to share experiences, heal from the past, and fight against continued abuse. Janet, under the pen name, Rachel Grieves, is the editor, though Assistant Editor, Tayla Andrews, currently does most of the work. In 2001, Janet Hill decided to branch out and publish books as well. Miranda and Starlight, released in February, 2002, is just the first of the Starlight series and is in it's second printing. The revised/second edition of Miranda and Starlight, which won the Notable award from Writer's Notes Magazine, has some corrections and changes in wording as well as four new line drawings by Pat Lehmkuhl. The following books, Starlight's Courage, Starlight Star Bright, and Starlight's Shooting Star fourth. The fifth book, Starlight Shines for Miranda, was awarded Best Book, 2004, by USA Book News in the young adult category. The sixth book: Starlight Comes Home, which completes the series, was given an award for "first-runner-up" for young adult fiction by Writer's Notes Magazine, 2005.
Wishing to give other talented, but unknown authors a voice, she began publishing other authors with a delightful middle-grade fiction by Dan A. Peterson which came out in 2005: Fergus: the Soccer-playing Colt. It was a finalist for the ForeWord Magazine 2006 Book of the Year Award. Absaroka, by Joan Bochmann, a Vietnam era story of a soldier come home, received Honorable Mention for the Ippy Award (Independent Publisher's annual awards) for western fiction. An Inmate's Daughter, by Jan Walker, released in March of 2006, is a juvenile fiction about a girl whose father is in prison. In June of 2006, Danny's Dragon, a story of wartime loss (ages 10 and up) by Janet Muirhead Hill is being released. Still small and struggling to grow, Raven Publishing, Inc. currently publishes no more than three books a year. The calender is quite full for the next several years.
Author, Founder, and Publisher: Janet Muirhead Hill, author of the Starlight books, and Danny's Dragon, a Story of Wartime Loss, is also founder, publisher, and editor-in-chief of Raven Publishing, Inc.
