Title

Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell One-Stop career Centers

Description

The six Eastern New Mexico University Roswell One Stop career Centers in southeastern New Mexico have a dual mission-to help TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) clients become self sufficient and the help federal WIA (Workforce Investment Act) clients become better skilled employees.

The current mission, however, is not totally new. Part of it began in the late 1990’s. The Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell (ENMU-R), New Mexico Works Program was created in 1998 after the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act was enacted in 1996.

The Reconciliation Act transformed the nations welfare system in a Work First program. The program, which is known as TANF and is a partnership between ENMUR, the Income Support Division of the New Mexico Human Services Department, the Office of Workforce Training and Development (OWTD) and the Eastern Area Workforce Development Board, provides welfare clients with life skills training, educational opportunities and job placement services as well as other occupational services that may be considered needed.
