o on safari in Africa, get chased by a wild elephant, walk a mile in your cowboy boots up steep mountain trails, view the heavens at a star party, ride a wagon train on the pioneer trail, sit in a pup tent beside the Pacific Ocean. Of course traveling to and from art shows is also an adventure. The miles and people he met over the years of painting have endeared him to many. His faith in God; love of family, and sense of humor has sustained him through the hard and adventurous times.
For Hulan the love of art has always been there, so, in his middle teens his parents signed him up with “Art Instruction”, a Commercial Art course out of Minneapolis. This was interrupted when he was drafted in 1953. He then served in the 83rd engineers in France as Company Painter. While on leave he toured parts of Italy, France and England.
Hulan decided to go to Seattle Pacific University in the fall of 1957. After completing his Physics degree in June of 1965, he taught Jr. High Science for 3 years. During that time he joined Gallery North, and completed about 10 paintings selling 6 of them at his first show. This and other significant things encouraged him to change careers in 1968.
