Preparing the School for Your Child with Special Needs

My new foster son's teacher called me yesterday to ask if my son preferred his formal name or a shorter version. He, of course, prefers the formal version. I’m working on getting him to answer to the shorter version – saves time when one has 4 kids to holler at in the morning! I then asked her if I could meet with her before school starts to let her know about the different issues he has and what his struggles have been academic wise. She was very interested in having the meeting so we set the date.

Terri Mauro, your Guide to Parenting Special Needs, has a listing of different special needs that she has organized so that you can help prepare your child's teacher for the new school year. Simply follow the links to find information regarding specific disabilities, then go to How to Assemble a Teacher Information Packet for step-by-step instructions on using these tips and handouts to help your child's teacher help your child.

Adoption Poems

I really enjoy poetry. Not just the reading of poems, but the writing of poetry as well. We have many talented readers who also enjoy writing adoption poems and many have shared adoption poems of their own. Some of the adoption poems have been written by adoptive parents, adoptees, or by birth family. Have you written any poetry that you would like to share with our readers?
