Title

foodfuture: Balancing the Debate on GM: Home

Description

This website has been produced by the Food and Drink Federation (FDF), on behalf of the UK food and drink manufacturing industry. FDF worked in consultation with a panel of experts, as part of its foodfuture initiative, to provide consumers with facts and figures about genetically modified (GM) crops and foods.

foodfuture explains what GM crops and foods are and what benefits and risks might arise from their use. It examines some of the concerns most commonly raised about the technology and reviews the current regulatory controls. It is hoped that this will make a useful contribution to a balanced debate on this important subject.

There has been a great deal of controversy about the introduction of GM crops and foods in the European Union. Some people are concerned that growing GM crops could harm the environment, or even that foods made from them present health risks. Others argue that GM crops have been rigorously tested, with no evidence of harm to human health, and can offer environmental and health benefits.
