Chester County unique heritage and historic preservation attract visitors and residents to the Delaware Valley Region. Chester County parks and recreational areas preserve the natural and cultural history of the County. The Delaware Valley area has rolling countryside, farms, woods, and wetlands. Many acres of land have been preserved throughout the Delaware Valley. Chester County was one of the three original counties of Pennsylvania created by William Penn in 1682. It was named for Cheshire, England. The county seat is West Chester and it is the wealthiest county in Pennsylvania. Chester County's borders were Philadelphia County to the north, the Susquehanna River to the west, the Delaware River to the east, and Delaware and Maryland to the south. Chester County's quality education and award-winning schools exceed national averages with higher graduation rates, higher standardized test scores and higher rates of college admission. The region's 14 public school districts are one of its most valuable resources.
