Description

Capital City Fire/Rescue is the agency responsible for providing fire suppression services, emergency medical services, and airport rescue and firefighting within the City and Borough of Juneau. These services are provided from the five fire stations: Douglas, Juneau, Glacier, Auke Bay and Lynn Canal. Each of the five stations has a volunteer firefighting and rescue group, i.e., Douglas Volunteers, Juneau Volunteers, etc. The City and Borough provides funding, equipment, and operational oversight to the five district stations and also to the Hagevig Regional Fire Training Center.

Three of the fire stations, Auke Bay, Douglas, and Lynn Canal, are unstaffed, volunteer response stations which provide fire suppression and first response rescue.

Two staffed stations, Glacier and Juneau, provide emergency medical service and firefighting service to the bulk of the population of the City and Borough. Each of these stations operate two ambulances and several pieces of fire apparatus. Airport rescue and firefighting service is operated from the Glacier station. Specialized rescue equipment is also based at the Glacier Station. The career staff(Firefighter/EMTs) at the Glacier and Juneau stations work a 24 hours on, 48 hours off shift schedule. The minimum staffing at these two stations is two firefighter/EMTs for each ambulance, two firefighters on the airport rescue and firefighting trucks, and one to two firefighters for the fire apparatus. Thus, the minimum staffing is five on duty at the Glacier Station and three on duty at the Juneau Station.
