- The Johnny Appleseed Trail of North Central Massachusetts spans along Route 2 between the historic "Freedom" Trail and the very popular "Mohawk" Trail. The historic and quaint traditional New England cities and towns within this thriving and scenic region include Ashburnham, Ashby, Athol, Ayer, Baldwinville, Barre, Bolton, Clinton, Erving, Fitchburg, Gardner, Gill, Groton, Harvard, Hubbardston, Lancaster, Leominster, Leverett, Littleton, Lunenburg, Montague (Miller's Falls, Turner's Falls), New Salem, Northfeild, Orange, Pepperell, Petersham, Phillipston, Princeton, Royalston, Shirley, Sterling, Templeton, Townsend, Warwick, Wendell, Westminster, and Winchendon.
- The Johnny Appleseed Visitor Center is the gateway to the trail and is located on the westbound side of Route 2 in Lancaster, MA approximately 45 minutes west of Boston. The 2,000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility provides rest stop amenities such as rest rooms, vending machines, pay phones, an ATM machine and a touchscreen information kiosk.
